A Review Of Evinrude Outboards
In 2000, Popular Mechanics Magazine compared Evinrude outboards (the 1.7-liter V4) with the Mercury outboard motor (the 2.5-liter V6) and found that the Evinrude packed just as much power! Evinrude is sort of like the “hotrod” of boat motors. In a series of tests against four top competitors, including Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda, the Evinrude outboard motor accelerated second-quickest, just after Mercury. Thanks to its light weight and modest fuel consumption, Evinrude remains a top seller.
Today’s consumer demands that companies make environmentally conscious decisions, especially if that consumer happens to be a rather amphibious fisherman, boat enthusiast or power boater. After all, we want our children’s children to enjoy these beautiful lakes, ponds, oceans and waterways too. The Evinrude E-TEC is a class above the rest in terms of enviro-friendly design. Not only is it the quietest and cleanest of the outboard boat motors, but it also combines power with cleanliness and quietude. As a result, the Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine to receive the US EPA Clean Air Excellence Award. “The EPA jury originally thought they would have to go to a four-stroke engine to achieve such important air quality benefits,” said José Boisjoli, President and Chief Executive Officer for Bombadier Recreational Products. “We’ve demonstrated that our E-TEC two-stroke outboard engine carbon monoxide emissions are typically 30 to 50 percent lower than a similar four-stroke engine and, at idle, are lower by a factor of 50 to 100 times.”
In 1935, Johnson outboards joined Evinrude outboards to be known as the Outboard Marine and Manufacturing Corporation (OMC) but have since been purchased by Bombardier, which promised to restore the line to its “original glory.” Today, the Johnson outboard line is “tough yet refined.” With your Johnson outboard you can expect the digital sequential, multi-port fuel injection standard on all 40 – 70 HP four strokes, which translate to a lighter motor, a more precise fuel mix, crisp throttle response and great fuel longevity. Johnson outboard boat motors are complemented by thoughtful design elements, like a hydraulic timing chain tensioner, which means less trips to the service center, a long-track intake manifold that makes for quiet power, an offset drive for better balance and a dual cooling system for better durability.
Evinrude outboards are noted for three main qualities. These are low engine emissions, quietness of the engine at cruising speed and smoothness when shifting into gear. However, the Evinrude outboard is also noted for ease of starting, reliability, fuel economy and acceleration rate. After 60 years of weathering many storms, Evinrude has seen a lot of innovation and ingenuity.
