Once upon a time, asbestos was a great product discovered by the ancient Greeks and praised and prized for its properties against fire and heat. The asbestos related information would tell you that the Greeks loved the asbestos products so much that even though they knew about its fatal side-effects, they continued to use it. The continuous exposure to asbestos can cause not only asbestos cancer but also a host of other health problems, such as pleural plaque and asbestosis. This cancer is known to affect not only those who come into direct contact with it, but also to people who come into close contact with those who work with asbestos.

The most important asbestos related information is that it can be fatal to humans. The onset of the disease is extremely slow, sometimes taking some 40 years to fully develop; however, once the disease starts manifesting itself, it is only a matter of months before the person dies. They never believed, first of all, that the disease, from which they were suffering in their old age (60s and 70s), was actually the result of their lifetime exposure to asbestos products and other materials containing asbestos. For example, a family who lived under an asbestos roof didn’t know that breathing it in every day of their lives, ingesting food containing particles of asbestos and allowing it to settle on their skin and eyes, and inhaling it through the mouth and nose, would put them at high risk to develop asbestos cancer sooner or later.

If you go carefully through the available asbestos related information you would notice that it clearly states that anyone who is directly and continuously exposed to asbestos containing products and materials is at an extremely high risk of developing asbestos cancer. This put all those workers who in one way or other worked with products that contain asbestos in the high-risk bracket. These would be carpenters, electricians, painters, bricklayers, mechanics, plasterers and others, plus their families. There was only one way to counter this problem and that was through awareness. Since there is no cure, people should know what exposure to asbestos can do.

Looking back at all the asbestos related information, it is easy now to see how these dreaded diseases caused the death and suffering to so many people. The asbestos products slowly poisoned the people who lived in their proximity. Since the asbestos cancer takes as long as four decades to become full blown, it comes as no surprise that people were not able to find the cause and thus, preventive measures. By the time the disease was identified, the concerned persons were old and powerless to fight its ravages.
