Attic Insulation Installation
One of the places in your home that has the most insulation is the attic area. Many home owners choose to do their own attic insulation installation to save money from hiring professional contractors. Insulation is relatively inexpensive to purchase and you can do the job yourself in short amount of time. One of the primary reasons for upgrading the amount of insulation in your attic is to reduce energy bills. Increasing the depth of insulation in your attic can tremendously affect the heating and cooling bills that you have for your home.
One of the key factors for attic insulation installation is to leave the rolls of insulation wrapped until you have them in the attic. These rolls will expand when the plastic covering is removed and they can be a huge challenge to get into the attic. You will save yourself a lot of back ache and frustration if you leave the covering on until they are inside the attic.
Be certain to wear protective clothing, eye goggles and gloves when adding insulation to your attic. Always let someone know that you are in the attic and watch your footing so that you don’t crash through the attic floor down into the main part of your home. A piece of sturdy plywood is terrific to lie between the attic joists to offer support for walking and crawling on while you are installing the insulation.
Check the attic for electrical units, fans, light fixture wiring and vents. All of these areas should be free of insulation. Anything electrical should have plenty of space between the electrical components and the insulation to prevent accidental fires from the electrical components heating. It is recommended to keep insulation approximately three inches away from any fixtures that are in the attic area.
Once the insulation is installed, place a protective barrier over the insulation. This will keep moisture from building up and causing mold and mildew problems in your home. If there is a vapor barrier on the insulation, make certain it is on the bottom side when laying the first layer. The remaining layers put the moisture barrier side as the top and cut slits through it to prevent moisture build up between layers.
