Between Friends and HIMYM
For 10 seasons, Friends have brought joy to its millions of viewers weekly for their witty humor and the classic storytelling between the dynamics of six wacky characters that we all came to love. Even after five years that it is been off the air, TV fans still remember the New York coffee shop setting as these 24 year old singles grew before our eyes to having their love and dreams found. Between the pilot and the finale, no one will disagree that it is a prime-class entertainment in its time.
When Friends went off the air, many thought that their TV viewing will be fine. Hey, the TV won’t go away, right? (Ask NBC who have not yet recovered their ratings since the Friends era). Yet having these characters out of the small screen have emptied the appetite of the mid-teen to mid-30 demographic. At the same time, TV producers hesitated bringing back this kind of sitcom because it might be compared against Friends, a comparison that might be deadly for these kinds of show.
Enter now How I Met Your Mother. This sitcom features the story of Ted Mosbey, a 28 year-old architect who is ready to settle down and find a woman to marry. Along the adventure, he has four friends with him. Barney, who is afraid of commitment whatsoever, is the wild card of the cast for his singles-clad antics. He makes up these silly romantic laws to the delight of the viewers. Marshall and Lily represent what Barney hates – marriage. With this couple, we can see the dynamic of two young at hearts that had tough times and succeeded. Meanwhile, Robin is the new girl in the group whom commitment-loving Ted fell for. Robin would have been the perfect match for Ted except that he has something more in common with Barney – she freaks out when wedding bells come. Their characters are similar to Friends’ New York condo living individuals with great jobs and have a great place to hangout. Together they represent a dynamic team that results into the best comedy in TV for 2006 and 2007.
Friends and HIMYM do not have the same storyline, but the journey and the dance sings the same tune. The story of HIMYM is revolves on resolving the issue of Ted’s search for a wife. Along the way, Ted has grown through the pitfalls of commitment, crazy detours with other girls, falling in love with Robin and realizing that she is not “the one.” This growth is also seen with other HIMYM characters. Like Friends, each character share a unique bond together, and with each other that brings back the mushy and sappy comedy with a heart. It is a show that many want to root for.
HIMYM is a comedy show that should be in the set for years to come, not because viewers want another Friends episode, but because they can’t wait what these five New Yorkers meeting in a bar are up to.
