Bald Guy's Pick

Written by Ron Enderland, the keeper of all things bald

Week of 1/17/00
This one may raise a few hackles.

I can remember way back when, in 1971, when Miami played Kansas City to a three-overtime game which they won in the playoffs that year. Jan Stenerud kept missing field goals, and Garo Yepremian finally made the three-pointer that won the game.

I decided right then and there that I didn't like Don Shula. As a matter of fact, I kept disliking both him and the Dolphins after that.

Then, a funny thing happened. I fell in love with Florida. We began going to Destin or Tampa each year. But I still didn't like Shula or his team (I know Shula is basically a good guy, I just never liked him.).

Shula finally retired. Then things really went black.

Miami hired Jimmy Johnson. I was wanting to get over my dislike of this team, and they went and hired the one coach that I despise more than any other team leader in any other sport.

I'm not alone here. He is widely reviled by nearly as many people as those hating the Dallas Cowboys, whom he led to two consecutive Super Bowls (with the help of the rest of the NFC East, who obligingly got REALLY BAD about the time of Dallas' rise). Of course, many others think he is a great coach. Hey, we all have our opinions.

To make a long story short (I know, too late for that), Jimmy Johnson has stepped down (and I think that he means it this time). Dave Wannstedt, whom I really like, is the Dolphins' coach! I think I'm going to like this team.

This week's Bald Guy Pick:

NFL.COM-Dolphins

The website is for all Dolphins fans, as well as anyone interested in what's going on with their coaching change and the possibility of future Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino's returning or retiring.

Hey, I gotta tell you, I'm a Rams fan, and I'm happy for them. But I've been grinning all day over Miami's new coach (and the removal of the old one)!
