Mesothelioma, more precisely malignant mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs, the mesothelium. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.
Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart, the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis.
Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking, but smoking greatly increases the risk of other asbestos-induced cancers. Compensation via asbestos funds or lawsuits is an important issue in mesothelioma (see asbestos and the law).
The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. The diagnosis may be suspected with chest X-ray and CT scan, and is confirmed with a biopsy (tissue sample) and microscopic examination. A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to take biopsies. It allows the introduction of substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (called pleurodesis), which prevents more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, the disease carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.

A Filipino inventor , Rolando dela Cruz was able to formulate a cream from raw cashew nut to remove warts and moles on the skin. Later, the cream was certified as a viable treatment for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of skin cancer.

Dela Cruz and his family started marketing his products in 1997 as DeWart, a cream to remove warts, and DeMole, a cream to remove moles. In 2003, Dela Cruz reformulated DeMole by adding other ingredients and increased the strength of the cashew extract. He renamed the cream DeBCC.

Doctors from Philippine General Hospital (PGH) have certified the DeBCC cream as a possible treatment for Basal Cell Carcinoma or skin cancer after completing clinical trials and studies on patients. It was documented in the study, “Anacardium Occidentale (Linn, Cashew Nut Extract, DeBCC in the Treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma or Skin Cancer” by the University of the Philippines doctors Eric Talens, Orlando Ocampo, Daniel de la paz, Horacio Estrada and Porfirio Tica.

Dela Cruz invention also received the World Intellectual property Office gold medal for DeBCC as an outstanding invention.

Smoking is closely linked to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Each year, smoking kills about 5 million people and among them, female smokers and smokers in developing countries are the most vulnerable group.

When you ask smokers this question: “How did you addicted to smoking?” Most likely, he or she just cannot give you a definite answer because he or she simply could not remember how the habit was formed. However, a recent New Zealand study showed that smoking just one cigarette could simply cause tobacco addiction in some people.

The medical researchers asked 96,000 youngsters aged between 14 and 15 to fill in questionnaires, issued via schools between 2002 and 2004, about whether they smoked and whether they felt the need to continue smoking. They published their findings on February 20, 2008 in the Elsevier Journal of Addictive Behaviours.

Questions such as ‘Do you ever have strong cravings to smoke?”, ‘Do you smoke now because it is hard to quit?’, and ‘Did you find it hard to concentrate because you couldn’t smoke?’ were included in the questionnaires to calibrate any dependence on tobacco.

As expected, youngsters who smoked frequently replied that they felt the urge to continue smoking. What the researchers found surprising was that those infrequent smokers also reported a carving. It was found that 46 percent of those smoked less than one cigarette a month had diminished control over the urge to smoke. Among teenagers who found difficulty to repress an urge to smoke, 10 percent and 25 percent had the impulse within 2 days and one month of smoking their first cigarette respectively.

The responses from the study confirmed previous research showing addiction rises as more cigarettes are smoked, and it starts after the first cigarette. Smoking one cigarette can simply prompt a loss of autonomy, as suggested by the researchers.

Besides being a great medicinal herb for heart health and a great culinary spice, cayenne pepper has also been documented by none other than the American Association of Cancer Research as being an effective deterrent against cancer. Japanese medical researchers validated this study as well asserting that capsaicin, the active ingredient in cayenne, somehow kills androgen-independent prostate cancer cells within the male body.

In an article published in Reuters on March 16, 2006, entitled, “Hot Pepper Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Study”, Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine asserts, “Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture. It caused 80 percent of the prostate cancer cells growing in mice to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis.” Furthermore, Japanese researchers discovered cayenne pepper can dramatically slow the development of prostate tumors.

While these studies may seem only applicable to males, cancer researchers say there is not that much difference in prostate cancer cells from other cancerous cells, therefore its applicability extends to all those who either want to avoid cancer or curtail it.

Cayenne pepper may be now scientifically proven to repel cancer cell proliferation, but its uses and health benefits are not one dimensional. In truth, its amazing curative powers are nigh unbelievable. If its anti-cancer capabilities weren’t enough, its effects upon the venous structure and heart are nothing short of miraculous. Cayenne is incredibly nourishing to the heart and according to herbalist and naturopathic doctors can immediately arrest a heart attack if the patient can ingest some cayenne.

Cayenne pepper is very hot to the taste but should be taken orally. It can be taken in capsule form, but its greatest benefits are taken by drinking it? Why drinking it? Because when taken orally in drink form, it has an immediate effect upon the heart and venous structure. Its proponents testify of a pleasant warm sensation cascading down their entire body, providing a delightful warmth.

So, how do you take it? Start by mixing 1/4th of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder in an eight ounce glass of purified and distilled water, mix it up thoroughly and drink it. When starting out, it may cause a slight gage reflex. If this happens, it’s because trying to drink too much. Start small and you should be fine. In time, you’ll move up to a full teaspoon, but again I recommend starting slow.

The truth is, it’s not as bad as you may think drinking this “cayenne pepper detoxification drink.” I promise. Start slow – your body is an amazingly adaptive organism and in just a few days, you won’t be as affected. The first few times you take it, it can come out of your eliminative organs with a slight burning sensation. Don’t be alarmed – this is perfectly normal. For most, after drinking it daily for a couple of days, their body has already adapted. Mine did.

In order to show its innocuous nature, an herbalist friend of mine once took a dime-sized amount and dropped it into his eye. It caused his eye to drip tears like he’d just won the lottery but it didn’t harm him at all. So, don’t worry, cayenne pepper is perfectly safe for you.

In closing, there has been a war on cancer for almost four decades with little progress made. While western medicine is a great boon to humankind, simple yet powerful alternative remedies are gaining greater popularity in the fight against ill health, cancer included. Cayenne is one of those herbs that can have a profound effect upon your health. This amazing herb not only strengthens your heart, but now it can help you fight cancer as well.

I have seen a lot of ads on TV lately saying that cervical cancer is often preventable. Isn’t that amazing? Though there are things you can do to prevent other types of cancer, there is never a straightforward answer that works. This type of cancer is known to be caused by a virus that can be taken care of it caught early enough. This is why it is important for all women to get a yearly pap test to be sure the virus is not present in their system.

The virus that causes cervical cancer is known has HPV. From what I know and have been told by my doctor, this is something that is transmitted sexually and is very common. Many people would never even know they have it. Some have outward symptoms but many women have no idea. For some people, having HPV is not a sure sign they will get cervical cancer, but it others, it happens.

If you haven’t gotten tested for it, you should most certainly put it high on your to do list. If you get a pap every year, make sure you ask if you are being checked for HPV so you know your doctor is keeping an eye on the situation.

Though cancer is tricky, isn’t it great to know you can help avoid cervical cancer just by getting a simple test from your doctor? What you know now can save you from a lot of agony in the future. Sadly, there are women out there who would risk getting cervical cancer this way just because they don’t go see their doctor.

There is something to be said for not liking to hear you have something transmitted sexually, but in our world, it’s entirely too common. A simple test can tell you if you have it, and you can go about taking care of the problem.

If you already have cervical cancer, you may find your doctor tells you that HPV was indeed the culprit. It isn’t always the case though, as cancer can happen anywhere and sometimes there are no reasons why. It just is. No matter what your source of cervical cancer may have been, the earlier you know it is a possibility, the sooner you can take care of the problem and live a cancer free life.

Don’t just hope you don’t have a problem, do something about it. Your children and your grandchildren will be glad to have you around if you do.

The caffeine in coffee has been linked to cancer of the liver, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. But the research on the carcinogenicity of caffeine to support these claims was often anecdotal or fraught with inaccuracies and remains difficult to duplicate and validate.

Coffee is a complex chemical compound . Researchers , so far have identified more than three hundred substances in coffee, of which caffeine is but one. Caffeine is not the only substance in coffee that has been linked to bladder cancer. Tar and other chemicals formed when coffee is roasted have caused bladder cancer in guinea pigs even when no caffeine was present. One study reported from the Harvard School of Public Health showed that drinking two cups of coffee a day may double the risk of cancer of the pancreas. The researchers said the results were only preliminary and suggestive of further study.

To explore the other side of this issue, there are some studies lately that showed some evidence that caffeine may be anticarcinogenic and actually helpful in treating cancer. When caffeine is given in combination with radiation therapy or anticancer drugs, the effectiveness of these treatments seems to increase. Caffeine appears to prevent cancer cells from repairing themselves, hence making them more liable to destruction by radiation and drugs and less likely to spread quickly. But don’t jump the gun , caffeine is not a cancer cure. More research and work needs to be done in these area as well.

If, in the future, coffee consumption and the incidence of cancer are linked, chances are it will be due to another substance than caffeine found in coffee. These examples clearly show that definite evidence linking caffeine and the risk of cancer is still elusive and much more research is needed before an association can be made.
