Most people are used to hearing that as of 2007, there is

no cure for either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Managing diabetes

is the way to go as curing it may not seem possible. This is

being challenged by alternative diabetes healing ways

as people do not want to depend on drugs.

Managing diabetes means proper care. It starts with a visit

to the doctor first to find out if you have diabetes, what type

you have, then arming yourself with as much information as

possible about the diabetes you are diagnosed with.

All management begins with controlling the glucose cycle.

The glucose cycle is affected by two factors, entry of

glucose into the bloodstream and blood levels of insulin to

control the transport out.

The glucose levels are very sensitive to both diet and

exercise, so change in either should first needs to be discussed

with the physician. Managing diabetes properly can be

very intrusive to the patient.

Proper management requires a complete lifestyle change and

frequent, sometimes multi-daily checks of glucose in the

blood.

It can change as people grow and develop and no two cases

are ever really the same. Today it is easier to measure the

blood sugar level.

Glucose meters are readily available and are quite easy to

use with a little practice and patience.

With a small drop of blood to the testing strip attached to

the glucose meter, the user is given the number, which

represents their blood sugar level. This in turn will let

the user know if and when insulin is needed.

Managing diabetes requires dependence on drugs. There are

now alternative diabetes healing possibilities as more people

are becoming disgruntled over how drugs are more about

controlling diabetes or living with diabetes rather than beating

diabetes.

they may be feeling, that should not be done with diabetes

symptoms. These symptoms could lead to blindness,

amputation of limbs, coma or even death.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes often come on suddenly and are

severely dramatic. The extra stress of diabetes can lead to

something called diabetic ketoacidosis.

Symptoms of ketoacidosis may include nausea and vomiting,

which may also lead to dehydration and serious problems

with the blood levels of potassium. This could lead to a

diabetic coma and ultimately death.

Other symptoms of diabetes may include extreme fatigue. We

all get tired at times, but diabetes triggers a more severe

fatigue than normal.

People with diabetes also experience unexplained weight

loss. This is because they are unable to process many of

the calories they consume. Losing sugar and water in the

urine also contributes to the weight loss.

Extreme thirst is another symptom of diabetes. Diabetes

develops high blood sugar levels and the body tries to

compensate by diluting the blood, which translates to our

brain that we are thirsty.

With this is also excessive urination. It is another way

our bodies have of getting rid of the extra sugar in our

system. But this can also lead to dehydration.

Poor wound healing is one of the hardest symptoms to deal

with. When the carrier has diabetes, wounds heal slowly, if at all .

This along with infections that are not easily remedied can attribute

to ulcers and loss of limbs.

It is important to see a doctor if such diabetes symptoms appear.

There are now alternative diabetes healing possibilities also with

It is the most common form of diabetes in children with ninety to ninety-five percent of carriers being

under 16.

Children’s diabetes or juvenile diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin.

It is an autoimmune disease, which means the bodies own defense system attacks the body’s tissues

or organs.

In the last 30 years the number of children’s diabetes had increased three times over and in Europe and the

US there is now appearing type 2 diabetes in children for the first time.

Obesity easily explains type 2, but not why there is such a rise in type 1 diabetes in children. It is believed that a

mixture of genetics and environmental factors are what triggers juvenile diabetes. But the majority of children

don’t have a family history of diabetes.

The symptoms for juvenile diabetes are the same as in adults. Thirst, weight loss, fatigue, frequent urination is

typical, but diabetes in children can also increase stomach pains, headaches and behavior problems.

Doctors should look into the possibility of diabetes in children who have unexplained stomach pains for a few

weeks, along with the typical symptoms.

If you believe your child may be experiencing these symptoms you should schedule them for a thorough

examination and discuss your thoughts with the doctor.

There are now alternative children’s diabetes healing possibilities also with more people becoming disgruntled

With diabetes becoming a growing problem in this country, diabetes information and an understanding of it becomes important. With the population at an all time high in weight gain and a low in health care, the problem is just getting bigger.

Diabetes is a disease of the metabolism. Our metabolism is the way our bodies use digested food for energy and growth.

Most food that is processed through our bodies is broken down by digestive juices into a sugar called glucose. Glucose is the fuel our bodies run on.

When we eat, and our food is being processed, the pancreas is supposed to produce the right amount of glucose from our blood automatically and release the right amount of insulin into our blood.

However, for those people with diabetes, little to no insulin is produced or the body’s cells do not respond correctly to the insulin that is produced. Therefore the glucose builds up and overflows into the urine and passes out of the body.

This is how the body loses its main source of fuel even though the bloodstream contains good amounts of the natural glucose.

There are three types of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. People who have type 1 are known as insulin-dependent.

This is an autoimmune disease where the body’s natural system is fighting against another part of the body. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the system attacks the insulin producing cells and destroys them.

Therefore the pancreas can produce little to no insulin. These people are in need of daily injections of insulin to live. Five to ten percent of diabetes cases are type 1 in the US.

However, there are also people who have discovered ways to fight diabetes and win with alternative healing diabetes information.

As we know, people with diabetes are exposed to a higher risk of developing heart disease and other medical complications, regardless of whether their diabetes is of Type-1 or Type-2.

For Type-2 diabetics, whether they are male or female, losing weight through diet and exercise are one of the alternatives that might just lower their risk of getting it. Nevertheless, men may have to work harder in order to have the same benefit.

Researchers at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Aurora studied more than 1,100 adults at risk of Type-2 diabetes and found that those who aggressively perform calorie-cutting and exercise did lower their risk of getting diabetes over the next year. However, although men lost more weight and exercised more than women did, their diabetes risk was not greatly reduced by doing so. These findings were published in July 2008 in the Journal “Diabetes Care”.

In the study, participants were randomly assigned to either an intensive program of lifestyle changes or standard lifestyle advice. People in the former group had to lose 7 percent of their body weight by cutting calories and fat from their diet and exercising for at least 2.5 hours per week. Both men and women were 58 percent less likely to develop diabetes over the next year when they were put in the intensive group.

According to the researchers’ observation, men generally exercised more and were more successful at losing weight: 47 percent reached the 7-percent target compared with 37 percent in women. It is known that weight loss can actually be translated into a reduction in triglycerides (a kind of blood fat) and hence blood sugar could be better controlled. For male participants, the decrease in these 2 factors was greater than the female participants.

Interestingly, there was in fact no additional benefit for men when it was related to diabetes risk. The rates of return to normal glucose tolerance levels and the development of diabetes did not differ very much for both sexes.

One possible reason for such phenomenon is perhaps men had more diabetes risk factors to begin with. Therefore, the researchers suggested carrying out further studies to discover whether and how various diabetes prevention tactics would affect men and women differently.

Diabetics, who can be classified as Type-1 or Type-2, have high levels of sugar in their blood. For Type-2 diabetics, weight gain can be very bad for them. It is believed that this kind of diabetes is driven by rising rates of obesity and sedentary lifestyles.

On the other hand, Type-1 diabetes, previous known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease, in which the body mistakenly destroys cells in the pancreas that make insulin.

The function of insulin is to convert sugar, or glucose, into energy. The excess sugar in the blood will damage organs including the eyes, kidneys and heart for both types of diabetes. Diabetics are at high risk of developing heart disease, kidney failure and blindness.

A recent study by the researchers at the University of Pittsburgh indicated that people who gained weight over time were less likely to die than others studied, while those classified as underweight were facing greatest risk for death. Even obese or overweight Type-1 diabetics were less likely to die.

The researchers tracked 655 patients with Type-1 diabetes for 20 years and found that those people who gained the most weight over time seemed to have lower mortality than those who gained less weight or lost weight. According to the researchers’ interpretation, Type-1 diabetics are often underweight. If they were able to gain weight, it means that they may also able to control their disease better. The findings were presented at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco during June 2008.

When statistically accounted for waist circumference (a risk factor for death), the researchers also discovered that overweight or obese patients were less likely to die when compared with patients with a normal weight.

Perhaps, based on the findings, the concerns on growing rates of obesity will have to be looked differently for Type-1 diabetics than for the general population. However, people should not take the results of this study as excuse for them to go out, eat, and put on weight.

Especially when you land into the category of overweight or even obese, exercise is even more important as it will somehow assist you manage your body weight.

Recently, a study had found that a week of exercise significantly improved the function of insulin-making beta cells for a group of sedentary older people who are at risk of developing diabetes. The researchers from University of Michigan published their findings during March 2008 in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Although the study showed that short-term exercise boosts insulin sensitivity, how it might affect beta cell function remains a mystery.

Beta cell function is known to decline with age though the cause is not clear. Ageing may also make people less sensitive to the blood sugar-regulating effects of insulin and impaired insulin secretion may be developed.

There are 12 sedentary individuals aged 60 and above were examined in the study. They were asked to perform an hour-long workout every day for a week. Stints on a treadmill, exercise bike and cross-training machine were included in the exercise sessions. The participants were required to work out at 60 percent to 70 percent of their maximum allowable heart rate capacity.

At the end of one week, the sensitivity to insulin showed an increase of 53 percent, on average, and the beta cell function (called the disposition index) had raised by 28 percent for the study participants. Meanwhile, the researchers could not find any changes in the fat mass, levels of fat in the blood, or any other factors that might explain the effect of exercise on beta cells.

As such, the researchers indicates that longer-term exercise training studies are required and are in fact in progress currently to evaluate further exercise training effects on beta cell function in age-related glucose intolerance.

Diabetes is a condition, if not managed well, that might lead to other complications like kidney failure, blindness, and neuropathy. Meanwhile, a diabetic may have a higher risk of getting heart disease.

The existing drugs for diabetes have been accused of their side effects and limited action. This has therefore prompted for searching of alternatives to treat diabetes.

Bitter melon, also known as balsam pear, is a plant eaten and used medicinally in many parts of Asia. In a recent study, it was found that substances from bitter melon could provide the basis of new drugs for treating diabetes and obesity. As we know, diabetes and obesity are two of the risk factors for heart disease.

The researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai reported in the Journal Chemistry and Biology that bitter melon has shown to reduce blood sugar in animal and human studies.

In the current study, the researchers isolated and described several compounds from bitter melon known as cucurbitane triterpenoids, and tested their effects on glucose (sugar) and fat metabolism in cells and in mice.

When tested in muscle and fat cells, the compounds stimulated the glucose receptor GLUT4 to move from the cell interior to the cell surface, thus promoting more effective glucose metabolism. Several of the tested compounds had effects comparable to those of insulin.

When tested in mice, two of the compounds promoted both glucose tolerance and fat burning, and one was particularly effective in promoting glucose tolerance in animals consuming high fat diets.

As revealed in the study, there may be as many as 70 active compounds in bitter melon. The researchers concluded that the present study provided an important basis for further analysis of structure-activity relationship to develop optimized leads from bitter melon for the treatment of insulin resistance and obesity.

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which human body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin, or cannot make proper use of the insulin it produces (insulin resistance). A diabetic, who does not manage the condition seriously, could likely become a candidate for heart disease.

There are 2 types of diabetes, namely Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes.

Type-1 diabetes is a condition in which beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin are destroyed in early childhood by the body’s immune system. The disease is very common among people of European descent, affecting around 2 million Europeans and North Americans. The reasons are still unclear.

Type 2 diabetes, which is far more common, is associated mainly with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. It is becoming epidemic in many developed or fast-developing countries.

New evidence reported on March 13, 2008 in specialist journal “Archives of Disease in Childhood” that taking vitamin D supplements in infancy might help a youngster prevent Type-1 diabetes.

Doctors from St. Mary’s Hospital for Women and Children in Manchester, northern England looked at 5 studies in which children were monitored from infancy to early childhood to see if vitamin D supplements could reduce the risk of becoming diabetic.

The risk of getting diabetes was reduced 29 percent in children who took extra vitamin D as compared to those who had not.
