A Pergola is a structure that is used as a shade, in an open space on the ground. It is also called a tent or a porch. Pergolas can be built in different sizes and varieties. Cedar Pergolas are known to be durable and can last for ages. The great red western Cedar is known to have a fragrance when newly used, that can soothe the mind. Cedar Pergolas are these days preferred than the conventional store ones, due to two reasons…they are durable and are light so can be moved from one place to another.

Typically a cedar pergola well maintained can last for ages in dry weather. Even in rough weather the wood can last typically for 40-50 yrs if maintained and polished. Typically one can find the cedar pergolas in different shapes and sizes. A typical one is like a tent, another one with horizontal beams placed over one another with a wooden framework to support it and this can look wonderful. They can be used just as a porch or even like a shade in open sun in the yard, for a great coffee table to be housed inside.

The next question that would arise in mind would be what would be the maintenance cost. One can select cedar wood and then decide on the nature of the design, as to how to build the pergola; one can simply build an arch of stone and have cedar wood to do the interiors that will work well. Apart from this one may also use a wooden grill for a closed pergola. The windows can be bent and wooden tapestries can hang to give it a spacious yet trendy look. Typically this can be used if one is extremely artistic, or if one houses art exhibits made of wood.

If you are a compost maker, a compost thermometer can do wonders for you. These are thermometers used to monitor temperatures of interior parts of compost piles and windows. These are fitted with a reader so that you can compare the temperature every time you want. By checking the temperatures you will know, the correct internal temperature of your compost pile and whether you’re composting is going on well. These instruments are also used to measure temperatures of mushroom farming, as well as the temperatures of recycling of wastes and disposal of wastes.

Compost making is easy if you remember some basic rules. It is a convenient method for converting organic waste of your garden and home into useful garden soil for your farms. To facilitate fast decomposition of the organic waste, the microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria need nitrogen, carbon, moisture and oxygen. You can mix green grass, dry leaves, and water to supply nitrogen, carbon and water respectively. When you mix the compost mixture use a wooden stick, as it manages to distribute a good amount of oxygen into the compost pile. You can put almost all organic wastes into the compost pile.

There are three basic methods of making compost. They are cold composting, hot composting and compost making by using rotating barrels. Cold composting is useful when you have very little organic waste and as a result very little compost to make. It is a very slow process and it will take many months to complete the process. While hot composting is a fast method but it takes lots of hard work. You have to keep the pile in a well drained area of with a size 3′x3′x3′for sufficient heating up. It is necessary to enclose the pile with a wall. You can use ½ cup of fertilizer containing nitrogen in the pile. Measure your pile’s temperature using a compost thermometer. When it is cooked properly turn the compost out. Rotating barrels also work in the same way but it has many advantages. It resists pests and it is very easy to supply air for the pile.

Worm compost is generally made in a container, which is filled with red worms and moistened beddings. You can add food waste and with the help from micro organisms the worms would convert food waste and bedding into compost. This worm composting process can be done through the year whether indoors or outdoors or at homes or at office. This is a natural method for recycling all the nutrients in food waste which does not give odor. The result of this would be a good compost soil that is very rich got house plants patio containers and gardens.

Worm composting: You can either buy or use an old box as you create holes in the bottom. You can then fill the box with red worms and moistened bedding. Then just create some space in between and bury all your food waste and cover it with bedding. You can also add some sand or soil in order to provide gravel for the digestive process of the worms. You will need:

- Worms nearly 500 to 2,000 red worms

- A container of plastic or wood

- Bedding

- Food waste either vegetable or fruit waste

You can use an old dresser drawer which his perfect for a worm composting. A wood container is actually very absorbent which is very beneficial for the worms. The plastic containers can also work but the compost might get very wet. You can prefer choosing red worms which are ideal for worm composting. You can easily find them in aged manure and piles of leaves. You can either get the worms from a compost bin or can also purchase them from a farmer or horse stable. You can give moist bedding to the composting. A very suitable material would include cardboard and shredded newspaper. The worms that you add in the composting will eat food scraps like vegetable peels and fruits and other organic food wastes. In order to avoid any problems you should avoid dairy products, compost meats and oily foods and grains and you should also avoid plastic glass and tin foil.

Everyone seems to be going green these days. After thousands of years of abusing the earth and its resources, mankind has finally figured out that they need to be a bit more conservative with the resources they use as well as help to give back to the earth in order to preserve it for future generations. Composting is one of the ways which you can do these things.

By composting yard and kitchen wastes, you’ll avoid sending such items as grass clippings and leaves to fill up landfills, and you’ll also be making rich fertilizer which will give your soil a real boost. It’s not a difficult process in that there is very little you will have to do. The first step, however, should be to build a composting bin where you will keep your compost materials for the six months to two years it will take to naturally decompose them.

The simplest, and probably easiest, type of compost bin you can build is one made of galvanized chicken wire. You can either stake this unit to the ground if you have a spot where you’d like it to be permanently, or you can make it free-standing and, thus, portable. Being able to move the bin is a good idea, because that will give you easier access to the well-decomposed material at the bottom of the bin and while you allow the rest of the material to continue decomposing.

Another very simple bin can be made by attaching a framework of snow fence to four stakes. A good sized bin can be 3′ x 3′. Put pressure-treated wood or metal posts into the ground three feet apart to make a square. Then you can tie the snow fence to the posts with heavy wire. You can also attach the ending of the fence to the start with wire. Your snow fence needs to be 13′ long and at least 3′ high to make the bin large enough to be functional.

A worm compost bin is a good idea if you have a lot of fruit and vegetable scraps you want to recycle. Basically a worm compost bin is nothing but a wooden box with a hinged lid and a few drain holes in the bottom. You start by putting worm bedding material in the bottom of the box. This can be peat moss, brown leaves, or moistened, shredded newspaper and cardboard. Estimate the number of pounds of food waste you have each day, and add a pound of worms for each half pound of scraps.

If you have access to some old pallets, you can wire them together in a square to make a bin. In order to give yourself easier access to the material at the bottom of the bin, you can hinge one corner instead of wiring it shut so that you’ll be able to easily open the bin and remove the material you want.

A good type of compost bin is one that rotates the materials inside. Not only do you not need to layer the materials you put in, but you can toss in whatever you like and mix it up by turning the unit. A very simple turning compost bin can be made using a 55 gallon drum. Punch some air holes in the ends, and cut a door in one side. Hinge the door and add a stop so that you can close it. To turn the composting material, you simply roll the barrel.

Of course, there are also a lot of commercial composting bins available, and some of them are really fancy. However, you’ll find that a do-it-yourself compost bin works just as well as the more elaborate units do, and they will cost you much less to do the same job.

The ingredient of vinyl is rigid polyvinyl chloride that is modified for providing superior strength and ultraviolet resistance. Unless, subjected to unusual impact, the vinyl material will not break easily. Building a pergola of vinyl material increases the durability of the pergola. Vinyl pergolas may seem to be expensive initially, but the maintenance cost is almost negligible.

Vinyl pergola has a lot of benefits compared to other materials that are used for installation of a pergola. Vinyl pergolas are resistive to staining and hence it does not need any annual staining treatment or any other kind of treatment. Also it is rigid and does not rot very easily. It is extremely durable and stable. It can withstand high winds, hails and heavy snow falls, along with, other non-natural hazards like chemicals used in swimming pools and spas. It also has high resistance to harsh environments, such as extreme cold, heat, etc. Hence it saves valuable time by not having you to replace wood, or entire beams, due to the damaging effects of climate. The dirt and debris can be easily hosed off. Also, it does not require annual coloring since the coloring is molded into vinyl decking during manufacturing. In this way, the vinyl pergolas are maintenance free, thus saving a considerable amount of money and time that can be spent with your family in enjoying the beauty of the pergola structure instead.

Moreover, the installation of a vinyl pergola is simple with just few steps of installation that comes with a pergola kit. Mounting of the vinyl pergola on the patio or into the ground is much easier. It can be created as a freestanding pergola or an attached pergola depending on your personal choice. Due to its appealing features, it can be the right choice for your home.

There are many professionals available that can help you design customized pergolas for your home. You can send the designs of your choice to these professionals. These are experienced draftsmen who can draw the project according to your specifications, or also create an animation that will allow you to choose a shade for the pergola.

One of the pitfalls of summer is the chore of mowing the grass. By ensuring that your lawn mower blades are sharp, you can help to make this task a lot easier.

There are several reasons to sharpen your lawn mower blades. Dull lawn mower blades can rip and tear at your lawn instead of cutting it which can leave the grass vulnerable to disease. These dull blades can also cut your grass unevenly, making your yard look worse after you mow than it did before you started. You may find that you also have to run over certain areas of your yard several times to cut the grass properly which leads to a lot of extra time and work on your part as well the extra wear and tear on your mower. By sharpening your lawn mower blades every month or two, you can save yourself and your mower from being overworked as well as help to ensure a healthy and well-mowed lawn.

Sharpening your mower blades is usually an easy process. First, you should disconnect your mower’s spark plug. This step will ensure that the mower does not start accidentally, leading to a serious injury.

In most models, you can use a wrench or a socket set to remove the nut that is holding the blade against the mower deck. If your model’s blades do not seem to detach this way, you should consult your owner’s manual to discover the method that the manufacturer suggests to remove the lawn mower blades. You should then remove the blades from the machine carefully, as even dull lawn mower blades can easily slice your skin.

Once you have the blades removed, you should use a file and run it repeatedly along the angle of the blade. This angle should usually be about 45 degrees. You also want to run the file along the edge the same number of times on both sides to help to keep the blade balanced.

By gently feeling the edge of your blade, you should be able to determine if the blade is sharp enough. Once you are satisfied with your results, you can place the blade back onto the mower deck, making sure that it is fastened securely. Remember to reattach your spark plug and you are now ready to begin mowing. For more on lawn mowers visit www.LawnMowerTypes.com.
