Tens of thousands of greyhounds are bred every year for the 27 racetracks in the United States, according to the U.S. Humane Society. They’re intentionally over-bred so there will be ample to replace old and underperforming greyhounds at the tracks. Each year, thousands of these retired dogs do not find a home; they are killed.

“These dogs have feelings and intelligence, but they are treated like racing slaves so people can gamble,” says retired police officer Irvin Cannon, a dog lover whose book, For the Love of Dog Tales (www.FortheLoveofDogTales.com), gives voice to man’s best friend. “Who is the winner in this scenario?”

The Humane Society estimates thousands of retired racing dogs are put to death every year. Rabbits are another industry victim; thousands are maimed or killed in the race-training process.

Cannon says there are some things to remember for those considering adopting a greyhound:

• They typically don’t have issues associated with abuse: Greyhounds may not get a lot of love in the kennels, but are not oftenabused by track personnel. They tend to respond to fear and violence by either freezing in place or running. Since they are trained to chase rabbits, they may be inclined to pursue small running animals.

• Greyhounds tend to be intelligent, timid: These dogs are considered gentle and reserved, but stubborn. If they sense they can take control, they will, so owners should quickly establish authority.

• Not used to other breeds: Greyhounds are born and raised around people and other greyhounds only. They may become confused or frightened by other dogs, and may need to get accustomed to cats.

• No fat, little hair: No dog should be left outside in the cold or heat. Greyhounds are especially sensitive to extreme temperatures and rain.

• Sweet affection: They do not bite; they show affection by licking, leaning and rubbing, much like cats.

Although there is a well-known and dedicated effort to find homes for aged-out greyhounds, Cannon said there is only one way to fix the racing industry – it must be ended. There are several national and international groups trying to put a stop to greyhound racing and gambling, including the Humane Society, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Until then, Cannon hopes these gentle dogs find homes.

“When you adopt a needy canine, you won’t find a better companion,” he says,“ whether you bring home a greyhound, a mystery mixed-breed or a purebred Labrador.”

About Irvin Cannon

Irvin Cannon was a poor kid growing up in Detroit when his family took in a stray dog. It surprised young Irvin that his father would be willing to share the family’s meager groceries with a dog, but he soon discovered the return on their investment was enormous. A former police officer in Detroit and Denver, he also worked as a corrections officer.

There are many languages to learn during cheap european travel , but most people usually don’t want to learn thinking that they can live speaking English. While most people will talk to you in English, a huge majority of them cannot speak in the American language. It is definitely going to be tough to travel to any part of Europe and not even be able to speak most of their language. In fact, many people regret not learning even the most simplest of words, as they found that nearly everybody in Europe does not speak English.

Languages to learn when traveling Europe

One of the main languages you need to learn is German and French. Everybody speaks those languages, and if ever you encounter somebody that doesn’t speak one of them, at least you know the other language. Communication is extremely important and a vital aspect for everybody. Those two languages are definitely the most important to learn. Once she learns those, she can easily adapt to several other languages used in other parts of Europe.

How to learn other languages

Consider finding a nice tape online or from your local bookstore that teaches the languages well. A tape or video is better than a book, unless the book itself has many audio tracks to listen along with. Don’t forget that a private coach is always recommended as well.

Learning other languages can be hard and tough, but it is extremely important that you do so weeks before you arrive. Asking where the bathroom is and where the closest phone booth is are quite hard to say in English. If you speak in English, they might point you to the wrong place and you might end up somewhere else. Learn these languages as best as you can, and you can be sure to enjoy your trip and have an easier time when taking family trips to europe .

Drinks automatically come with foods. So whenever we eat and whichever foods we eat, we essentially need to drink some beverage to swallow and appreciate more the taste of the foods we consume, just like in eating our favorite barbeque dish. When the barbeque is too excellent to eat, sometimes we tend to eat a lot of grilled meat that we tend to get choked with the amount of foods we consume. Clear and Ice cold water or beer are the most basic beverages to pair with barbeque and any kind of food but on occasions we may want to drink something more special than iced water or beer and wines.

Sparkling type of wines is an excellent pair for almost any kind of food that is grilled, may it be chicken, pork, beef, etc. Choose wines that are light-bodied, not heavy and easy to drink. White wines are best for roasted chicken, fish and other pork dishes. Barbeques that are rubbed and blackened with spices are best matched with white wines. White wines, like Sauvignon Blanc, have certain acidity and best suits the taste of spiced meats. Fish variants that have more fats like trout, tuna and rockfish, are best matched with Chardonnay and Burgundy. Vegetable grilled burgers and regular hamburgers with mushroom sauce are also best paired with Chardonnay.

Rosé wine are wines whose color range from orange to pink are perfect for adding spirit to a casual gathering in outdoor settings. The acid content of rosés when served cold and brisk are also good, perhaps better to match the grilled and roasted flavors of foods.

Pinot Noir is perfect for grilled salmon or pork. Other foods that go well with the Pinot Noir are smoked bacon and meats.

Red wines such as California Cabernet, Barolo and Bordeaux are best paired with grilled and barbecued beef tenderloin, ribs, steaks and beef burgers. If the barbeque is too spicy or hot, Malbec, Shiraz or Zinfandel may be substituted. In choosing wine for your barbeque dish, the main idea is to pick something out of simplicity. Especially in outdoor settings, select a beverage that can match the casual dining mood.

Yet if you want to make a more special dining experience with barbeque, whip up some concoctions from your mini-bar in the house. If you are grilling a flavorful pork barbeque, its bold and daring flavors are best suited with some light, airy, refreshing cocktail drink with a strong spirit base. Bring out your aged rum or whisky and mix with other appropriate liquids such as soda and you’ll surely have the most special barbeque of all.

Model trains have no shortage of brand names. You have the Lionels, MTHs, Bachmanns, and many more. But have you heard about the K-Line? Some might not have heard of this brand name other than its now current association with Lionel, but in its heyday, K-Line was one of the sought after brands of model trains due to its great designs at a very affordable cost.

K-Line was first owned by MDK, a small company founded in 1975 to market Lionel models. The brand K-Line was used for their tracks compatible for Lionel and American Flyer but not any original models or locomotives. However, when a toy company name Louis Marx and Company died in 1978, K-Line got its shot at the big time. MDK secured the tools and devices, including the molds, of the Marx model trains and accessories. Some of these were even scavenged from dilapidated and disused Marx factories. This gave MDK and K-Line the ability to build its own model trains.

They started with O27 scale trains. These were just copies of the original Marx designs but modified to run with and on Lionel products. However, they were cheap and this put K-Line on the market. They became so successful, K-line started to expand. This drew the ire of Lionel, who were they were in business with just a short 3 years back. They made their trains capable of not only running on the Lionel tracks but also capable of coupling with the Lionel trains, making their cheaper models attractive to even Lionel model owners. Many Lionel owners loved the cheaper K-Line cars that could go along with their locomotives.

With its success, K-Line started to expand into larger markets. They entered into the S scale models, with their own trains and tracks, and into the O scale which was the market dominated by Lionel. They even started to abandon their cheap and affordable philosophy and made O scale trains to compete with the high quality Lionel O scale trains.

This war that K-Line entered with Lionel would prove to be disastrous for K-line in the end. Lionel and K-Line fought fiercely but in the end, Lionel edged out K-Line in court and the latter eventually filed for bankruptcy. Afterwards, Lionel bought K-Line and now it exists as K-Line by Lionel.

Many of the original K-Line trains and models were cancelled because Lionel already produced equivalent models. This made these models, like the S scale K-Lines, become collector’s items. Even though the current K-Line is only limited in production, the originals have earned a place in the hearts of many hobbyists. Since they were copies of Marx Company models, another model line regarded as highly collectible, original K-Lines are also sought after as a source of spare parts for Marx Company models.

Some of their classic designs are already becoming collector favorites. Some of the more high quality model cars that were coupled with the Lionel engines are growing in popularity, despite being out of production.

Even with its decline, the K-Line legacy continues. They started as a cheaper alternative to established model railroad companies but now have become a part of the history of model railways. The continuing demand for original K-Lines may give this brand a new future.

It is important that we test the boat ignition switch so that we can avoid any trouble ahead. It is part of safety measures among sailors. Also ignition switch is very important to a boat because it is its driving force to get started so it is more conventional that beforehand you can test the integrity of your boat’s ignition switch. In addition, testing this device is easy and you don’t need to call any technician to work it for you but you can do it yourself.

Step 1 – BEFORE THE TEST

See to it that you have read the manual of your boat particularly in boat ignition switch because it may differ from one boat to another. Then check your boat engine for any leaks; it may cause explosion when you try to start using the switch. And check the wirings of the boat especially the one connected to the switch, you may not know, it may cause a short circuit problems. Also it is very important that you check the condition of your battery before the test because oftentimes problem occurred mostly in the batteries. You can start at the battery and follow the wires that lead to the engine, and you can check the connection and checking the starter solenoid which connects your battery from the switch.

step 2 – ON THE TEST

Now you are ready to make things spark. Slightly turn the key using the boat’s ignition switch to start the engine but listen carefully if there is any unusual sound and if there is, then stop the test, you may have an engine problem. Finally, if you are successful in switching on the engine, let the engine have a successive long revolution to heat your engine, and then switch off the engine and wait for a couple of minutes then do step 2 again until you are satisfied in testing your ignition switch.

The cost of emergency passport processing may vary according to several different factors. It is important to take into consideration all relevant factors so that you can better determine the true cost of getting a passport in a hurry. This article will explain the potential costs involved in applying for an emergeny passport.

Emergency Passport Fees

Application Fee – The application fee is paid to the U.S. government to cover the expense of processing your application. The application fee for new passport book or a renewal for an adult is currently $75. The fee for a new passport book for a minor is $70. The passport card is less expensive but limited to air and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. The fee for the card is $20 for adults and $10 for children age 15 and under. There is no application fee for adding visa pages, changing a name in a passport issued less than a year earlier or correcting errors in a passport.

Execution Fee – The execution fee is only paid by U.S. citizens who submit application form DS-11. Applicants who are obligated to submit this form must take an oath and have an agent witness the signing of the application. The execution fee covers this service.

Expedited Service Fee – This fee is applied to all applications in which the applicant requests to have the process expedited. This is optional for those who apply by mail. It is mandatory for those who apply at a regional passport agency. Requesting expedited service for an application sent by mail means the process will be completed in 2-3 weeks. Applications submitted at a regional agency are usually processed the same day or, at times, the next day.

Professional Expediting Fees – Travelers who need a passport quickly but are unable to visit a regional agency themselves can still get emergency passports by authorizing a professional expediter to submit their applications. Fees for this service vary depending on the expediter you choose and how fast you want to get your passport.

A request to receive your passport in 10-14 days may mean paying a fee of approximately $65 while same day service can be more than $300. While this may seem very expensive, it is important to evaluate other expenses that you may have when applying for an emergency passport so that you have an idea of the true cost.

Additional Expenses for Emergency Passports

An honest comparison of the cost of emergency passport services must take into consideration the additional expenses that an applicant might have in the process. First, let’s look at possible expenses for American citizens who want to submit the application themselves at a regional agency.

Time - This is included at the top of the list because it is one that is often not considered but, at the same time, can be very costly. How much is your time worth? You may have to spend a long time on the phone just to get through to the automated appointment system for the regional agencies. Then there is the time consumed traveling to the agency. Finally, you will probably have to wait in long lines for quite a while. Since the agencies are closed on weekends, you will have to go on a weekday. Does this mean losing a day of work? How much will that cost you?

Transportation – Whether you go by car, bus, train, subway, plane, taxi or a combination of these, you could end up spending a lot of money just to get to the regional agency, especially if you live far away. If you go by car, you will also have to pay for parking. Since agencies are located in major cities, this expense can be a lot, too.

Food – Unless you live near the agency and are going at a time of the year when the deman is low, you will probably spend several hours to a day or more outside of your home. More than likely, you will have to purchase a meal or two. Don’t forget to include this in your calculations.

Lodging – Applicants who live great distances away from the nearest regional agency may find it necessary to stay overnight in the city where the agency is located. It is difficult to find a descent hotel for less than $100.

The expenses listed above are those that you may have if you decide to apply yourself. But what additional expenses are there for those who decide to apply through a professional expediting service?

Postage – Once you complete the expediter’s online application, you need to mail your completed passport form and supporting documents. To accelerate the process you should use a two-way overnight delivery method. There are several different options but the cost should be between $40 and $80. You are encouraged to choose a traceable method of mailing your documents.

As you can tell from the information above, the cost of emergency passport processing can vary greatly. The mandatory costs include the expedited service fee, application fee and the execution fee (in the case of a new passport). The cost that you have beyond this will depend on whether you decide to submit the application yourself or get an expediter to submit it for you.

Before you rule out a professional expediting service, be sure to carefully calculate the expenses you will have if you decide to visit the regional agency yourself. You just may find that the cost of emergency passport processing through an expediter is actually less after everything is added up.

Have you always had a dream to live in Europe or live somewhere abroad? Are you wondering how you can legally live in Europe?

Live in Europe For A Short Term
Citizens of many countries (USA, Australian, Canada, etc) can live in Europe legally for 90 days with nothing more than a valid, current passport. No visa or permit is required for passport holders of these countries. Otherwise, if you are not a passport holder of one of these countries you will need a Schengen visa to live in Europe for up to 90days.

Live in Europe for a Long Term
If you want to live in Europe for a long term, you will require a residency permit. These are complicated, but not impossible, to come by. There are three possibilities.

* Get Citizenship: Some countries, such as Ireland, allow descendants of citizens to become passport holders. If you have a mother or father or sometimes even a grandparent with a European nationality, see if you can also be granted a passport to that country. Once you have a European passport, you can live anywhere in Europe with nothing more than completing some simple paperwork.

* Get a Job: If you can get employment from a European company the company can often get the necessary paperwork done for you. How do you get a job with a European company? If you are a student, there are often internship or trainee programs which you can apply for. Permits for interns are relatively easy for a company to apply for and many large companies regularly do this. Once they get to know you, the company may be willing to hire you on a permanent basis.

If you are not a student but have marketable skills (computer programming, MBA, engineering, etc) are a native English speaker and preferably speak a European language try applying to corporate head offices of a major European company. For example, if you want to work in Germany apply to German corporate giants like Allianz, Daimler, Deutche Bank, Siemens, etc. If you want to work in France, apply to French corporate giants like Total, Renault, Air France, etc Why? Big European head offices usually exist to serve their smaller affiliate offices around the world and the corporate language is often English. If you have marketable and relevant skills, can speak and write English fluently and ideally, speak and write their native language, they may be interested in hiring you and should be able to justify your working papers to their authorities.

* Start a Company: Do you have a company or company idea? Have you considered starting a Foreign Business ? Many countries will give permits to people who start a small company. In some countries you must be able to demonstrate that the company will be financially successful and in some cases you will have other requirements such as hiring a certain number of employees (usually 1 to 5). Sometimes there are few requirements other than having a legal company. One of the best places for a US citizen to found a company is The Netherlands. The reason is that there is a special treaty between the USA and The Netherlands called the Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) which grants special privileges to US passport holders. There is still a lot of paperwork necessary and it can be quite expensive and time consuming. But, the requirements are relatively easy. You may want to discuss this option with a lawyer experienced in applying for DAFT permits.

How do you get more information about the requirements for starting a company abroad? Every country has a government agency which is interested in attracting business owners. The agency will give you free advice about how to start a business in their country. To find the agency for a particular country, Google “Invest in The Netherlands”, “Invest in France”, “Invest in Switzerland”, etc.

Are Ouija Boards Dangerous? – True Ouija Board Stories

Are Ouija boards dangerous? Whilst there are some who through skill or good luck find positive experiences whilst using the Ouija board the majority of those who dare to play live to regret it. With tales ranging from ominous noises to full-blown Demonic possessions the Ouija board is not a game to be entered into lightly, as both sanity and soul are said to be placed at risk by those who place their fingers upon the planchette, and ask questions of those who dwell beyond our realm.

Whilst there are Ouija board rules and Ouija board protection prayers etc. that are said to minimize the chances of a Ouija board player connecting with a negative entity if used correctly, there are no guarantees. And even the strongest willed and stable minded may lose their nerve, when reality and logic twist and bend around them opening their eyes, to a new world of terrifying possibility’s.

DARE YOU PLAY?

So, are Ouija boards dangerous? Read the following true Ouija board stories and decide for yourself:

True Ouija Board Stories

* ‘We accidently summoned a demon and we had to banish it with the help of our friends cousin who was fightin it he told us how to banish it but it is followin the chick who summoned it i talked to a demon that told me to cut my nose off to let me talk to a angel and keep doin 666 which was pretty creepy.’

* ‘My sisters and I played thing game when my oldest sis got a brand new apartment after leaving the nest. The three of us played for about two-hours, lights off and about four candles flickering. When we asked the spirit to prove he was there, my sisters then neon phone lit up and rang! Wanna hear something even crazier??? She didn’t have service yet! The phone wasn’t going to be connected until another four days and worst yet, it was even plugged in!’

* ‘me and some friends was parting one night and you not supposed to play when you have an unclean system, its easier for possesion, but it started saying bad things to me so i started cursing at it. then it told me i was going to suffer with loss. we asked what it ment and it said i was going to loose someone very close to me. and it may be all just a crazy thing but the next day my mother died in an accident… and it was horibile it was a horible way to go and I feel it told me it was going to happen.’
