Child Motorcycle Safety is a Concern for Riders

For someone who loves to ride their motorcycle, and has kids, I’m sure the question of when, and whether, you should let your kids ride with you has come up. Kids love to ride on a great bike, and sharing your hobby with your children is always a wonderful thing, but you want to make sure they stay safe. Is there a right age for when they’re ready to ride? Do you need to find special safety equipment to make sure that they stay as safe as possible? These questions are very important, and you need them answered before you take your kids out with you.

When you’ve decided to take your child with you, you’re first going to have to decide when they’ll be old enough to ride with you and stay safe. Never, ever bring an infant or toddler with you on a bike. They will not be safe under any circumstances, and will not be able to protect themselves, should you get into an accident. Your child is ready to ride with you when they’re old enough to ride a two wheeler bike by themselves. This proves that they have the balance and the skills to hold on and pay attention needed to go out for a ride with you.

If you have a child who is old enough to ride with you, your next step will be getting them the correct gear for child motorcycle safety. Just like you, they’re going to need a lot of special clothing and equipment to ride safely. And because they’re still growing, it’s going to have to be replaced often. If you have a group of families that all like to ride, you might want to try to arrange some sort of trade for older gear, to save costs. Do remember though that a used helmet is never safe.

What gear will your kids need? The first thing you’re going to need to buy is a well fitted kids motorcycle helmet. A full face helmet will help to protect your child’s face and head should they ever fall from the bike. For everyday safety, it’s padding will also help protect their ears from sound damage caused by the engine, and the UV faceplate will help protect their eyes and skin from UV damage, making it an essential buy. When you buy the helmet, make sure it does fit well and comfortably.

When you’re going to ride with your child, there are many other pieces of gear that are essential for child motorcycle safety. Your child will need gloves, boots, pants and a jacket. All of these items should either be made of leather, or another safe material, and should all be tested for motorcycle safety. Also important is fit, making sure that no item is either too big or too small, which can lead to injury.

Child motorcycle safety is important to any parent riding with their kids. As long as you follow the steps in this article and get the proper gear, you can ride knowing that your kids are protected.
