The WorldVillage chat rooms use an internet tool called Internet Relay Chat, or IRC. To use our IRC channel, you will need an IRC chat program. They are easy to install and easy to setup. Once you have it set up and configured, chatting will be as simple as starting the program. We recommend one of the programs below. Click to download if you don’t already have one.

JavaChat
If you have a Java-compatible browser, you don’t need to download software. However, downloading mIRC does offer more options. But this is a great way to get on line and chat quickly!

mIRC
Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME, NT; 16- and 32-bit versions. One of the most popular chat programs. Allows multiple rooms and private conversations. Highly recommended for Windows systems! For other Windows IRC programs, check out CNet’s review of the top ten. Or you may select from the following menu of operating systems to find an IRC Chat Program that is right for you:

Amiga
Atari
Macintosh
MSDOS
OS2
Rxirc
UNIX
Vms
Windows

Once downloaded, you will need to probably decompress, unstuff, or unzip the file to your hard drive so you may install it. If you have never done this, don’t worry about it. It’s easy, and once you do it once, you’ll be ready for a lifetime of downloading! If you need a copy of a program to decompress your file, download here:

WinZip for Windows
UnStuffIt for Macintosh

Once you have your chat program set up (read the documentation that comes with them for additional information), follow these easy instructions to join our chat community:

1. Set your Server option to one of the following servers:

  • IRC.VillageIRC.net
  • US.VillageIRC.net
  • EU.VillageIRC.net

2. Set the Port option to 7000
3. Type in your Nickname (as applicable)
4. Type in your real name (as applicable)
5. Click the sign-in button. Once logged on, join #WorldVillage. That's it! Now everytime you log in, those parameters should be already set for you and you just need to sign in.
