Deer in the Garden
I live in a suburban city in North Carolina. Just minutes from the malls, chain store, doctors offices and all the big city amenities. However, my home is on a nice wooded lot
with a lovely meadow behind it. We love our garden, and so do the deer!
Sadly, I didn’t plant our garden as a buffet for the beautiful deer. I will admit it delights
my seven year old to watch them. Alas! I had to find a way to keep the deer out of the salad barerr, I mean garden.
I couldn’t keep hollerin’ and chasing em with a broom all day. I told my tale of woe to and old man I’d met in the neighborhood. He told me to take an old tater sack, (I used an old pair of my wife’s pantyhose) and fill it with hair from my next haircut, that keeps them away. They don’t like the human smell. He also told me to douse the area with urine from a human (actually his language was a bit more colorful) or another predator that would help keep them away. I’ve since learned that you can buy those things at a nursery or greenhouse. Also consider a bloodmeal mixture while you’re there that’s another strong smell that repels deer.
He told me that I should also put a fence around our garden. While this doesn’t work on all pests, it usually helps keep the deer out. The fence works best in combination with other repellants. Deer don’t care for the strong smell of deodorant soap the stronger perfume smell, the better. If I could hang a few bars around the fence line that would help.
I thanked the old man for the advice. I really enjoyed all the folksy stories to told while gettin’ around to his deer tips. Think I’ll go pee around my garden now.
