By on November 29, 2007

Candle making was a way of life for people in the olden days, but even now, it’s far from being a lost art. On the contrary – as our practical need for candles has all but disappeared, candles have become a decor item. Decorative candles are more popular than ever, and a candle gift basket can be a wonderful one-size-fits-all gift. Almost anyone can learn this craft, because candle making can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.

Traditional candle making involves using a candle mold to make thick, pillar candles, or dipping wicks in wax or tallow to make tapered candles. The latter is quite a time consuming process that is best done with specialized equipment, but it’s quite easy to make decorative pillar candles at home. Melted wax is poured into a mold, and a wick is inserted in the liquid wax and held in place. You don’t even need to purchase special mold if you don’t want to – a disposable plastic cup can make a fine pillar candle.

There are other types of candle making that are even easier. For example, very decorative candles can be made out of sheets of bee’s wax, which is simply rolled around the wick. Even small children can make these candles to add to a candle gift basket for a personalized holiday or shower gift. For more ideas on candle making check out www.CandleNovice.com.
