Charlton Heston, best remembered for his heroic roles ranging from “Ben Hur”, to “MichaelAngelo,” died Saturday at his home with his wife of 64 years, Lydia, by his side , reports from his family said.

” To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support,” the Heston family said in a statement.

” He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country. In his own words, ‘I have lived such a wonderful life! I’ve lived enough for two people.”

The last decade of his life saw Heston as a outspoken liberal Democrat who later attracted controversy for his unapologetic support of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and conservative causes.

Heston had hip replacement surgery in 1998 and survived prostate cancer that same year. He announced that he had been battling Alzheimer’s in August 2002.
