When we accept that no human being is perfect, it follows that the people running the IRS tax system are no better than you or me. They can and do make mistakes. Therefore it provides various channels that will help you with your IRS tax.

Get Tax Help from the IRS

The Taxpayer Advocate is an independent body within the IRS that handles your complaints against the IRS. You can approach them to fight on your behalf regarding any dispute.

The IRS has its own website, www.irs.gov. Use it to file your returns, order products, download forms and instructions, do research, check your previous year’s refund and receive tax news.

You can contact the IRS over the phone. You can order forms, ask questions, seek information and solve problems.

There are walk-in facilities available at all IRS branches, designated post offices and libraries for literature about tax, tax forms etc. For personal help, approach the Taxpayer Assistance Centers. Here, you can show your papers and get your questions answered. No prior appointment is needed.

You receive forms, instructions and publications by mail.

Twice a year, the IRS brings out a CD-ROM with the latest information. You can order for it over the phone or through the Internet.

Some Tips

As I said earlier, the IRS is not God. You don’t have to take their decisions as the gospel truth. Keep the following points in mind.

You do not have to pay penalties simply because the IRS has levied it. Write a letter proving that there was no deliberate attempt on your part to avoid taxes.

The tax audit done by the IRS can have mistakes. Check carefully. In case of any disputes, file an affidavit backed by documentary proof. Use the offices of the IRS Appeals office. You can also ask for closed audit files to be reopened.

You can ask for time not only to file your returns, but also to pay them. If it is impossible for you to pay the full amount, use the help of the Taxpayer Advocate Service to negotiate an installment plan with the IRS.

The IRS grants amnesty if you prove that it is impossible for you to pay the taxes.

Audit your tax returns. This way, there will be fewer questionable decisions.

The IRS needs your money to take care of your country, but you need money too to take care of yourself. Make sure that the two needs are happily reconciled.
