How lame can a newbie with a computer be? Well, that is how I felt. But what really got me was they laughed in my face and then made fun of me in a playful way. Needless to say I started to think I was more stupid than ever. In fact, they led me to believe I was putting them out as well.

I thought a basic question regarding ‘Why is my computer running so slow’ was a somewhat easy question and felt that getting an appropriate answer would be easy enough. Now I am struggling with my intellect being reduced several IQ points due to the way I was assisted. Being the even keel kind of person that I am, being made to feel this way was not a good thing.

Now ‘Can it be that easy to fix our own computer?’ ABSOLUTELY! Trust me when I say that being a so called computer techie is very short-lived. And by that I mean this technical ‘Stuff’ changes everyday and I firmly believe that it is hard pressed for anyone to stay totally on top of issues like ‘How to speed up an old computer’. Because what I found out is that the complexity has been virtually removed for the user. So even we can become experts.

Slow computers have become a mainstay among many people. The thought is ‘That is the way it is’ but in reality it does not have to be. It comes down to user education and using common sense and not letting a self-proclaimed techie mis-diagnosis the real problem. Many times it is that very mentality of not wanting to be bothered that pushes the actual problem out of sight. In what I have discovered is the operating system that is the failing point. Just like a car the operating system needs cleaning so the bad oil does not gunk up the engine.

The operating system is the Achilles heel of the computer and especially if Microsoft is the brand. ‘Why?’ you ask. It is my opinion that they developed a system that would not be smart enough to fix it self. You see there are three areas within the OS that contribute to the overall problem of a slow computer; the Registry, Startup file, and Uninstalled applications. Granted there are a few other lessor issues but these are the bulk of the problems.

In effect, it is not the computer that needs a CPU, hard drive, or memory upgrade but rather it is the Operating System that needs to be overhauled OR CLEANED UP. The absolute one truth, is that it will be cheaper going this route than buying a new computer or parts. Would you not want to spend a wise $30 in this area rather than a $100/hr repair job and not see any real improvement. In the short term you might see a slight speed increase but the problems are still there just hidden.
