How to pop a pimple – what you need and what you should be aware of

To safely to a pimple it is important to arm yourself with the right tools and understand the risks associated with popping certain types of acne blemishes.

Not all acne is the same. While some pimples can be effectively healed by popping others can be made worse.

The most important thing is to make sure that your pimple is ripe not over ripe for popping and then if it’s at the right stage, arm yourself with the right ‘pimple popping’ tools.

Following is a list of what you need to safely pop those zits:

* Hand sanitizer (for cleaning under your finger nails)

* Pure, gentle, non-comedogenic face cleanser

* Natural astringent such as witch hazel or salt water

* 100% cotton balls or absorbent pads

* Clean towel

* Clean washcloth

* Aloe Vera gel or medicated ointment like Polysporin or Neosporin

* Bandages

* Ice

For a step-by-step guide on how to pop, please read my post “How to properly pop a pimple so you don’t make it worse.”

Now for a few words of caution as it relates to acne blemishes and whether it’s wise to pop pimples even under sanitary conditions.

Never try to pop acne cysts. The reason is that acne cysts are deep and hard and are usually extremely painful. If you have severe acne you most likely have acne cysts and therefore should never attempt to pop your own pimples. Doing so will almost certainly result in scarring. If you do have acne cysts do your skin a favor and seek professional medical treatment.

Do a test to rule out allergic reactions you may have to medicated ointments or Aloe Vera gel. If you experience a rash or itching then chances are good you are allergic. The inside of your wrist is the best place to test any new products.

Always err on the side of caution and use only 100% cotton or 100% cotton absorbent pads. Opting for toilet paper and paper towels can irritate your skin as both contain harsh fibers.

Wishing you acne free skin!
