Ideas on Futon Mattresses
If you need an extra bed in your house but you don’t have a lot of extra room, check out a futon mattress. A futon will double as a couch and when you need it you can simply flatten out the frame and you will instantly have a new bed. If you are a college student with a limited budget, you can double up with a bed and a couch by choosing a futon, and you do not have to compromise on comfort. However, there are a few things that you should consider when you are choosing a futon mattress.
1) There are two types of frames, a trifold frame and a bifold frame. The bifold frame simply folds the mattress once in the middle and becomes the couch, where you are using the entire length of the mattress for the length of the couch. A trifold frame, folds the mattress once using the width of the mattress as the couch area. Both types are fine, it really comes down to personal preference.
2) Pay attention to the thickness levels of the mattresses. A good rule of thumb is to look for a mattress that is at least six inches thick. If you go any thinner than that, you will not be comfortable for the long run, and the mattress is more likely to develop lumps and bare spots quickly. Of course, you can choose a thicker mattress than that as well, however the thicker you get, the more expensive your mattress will be.
3) There are a few different combinations for futon materials to choose from. If you are looking for a lightweight mattress that will hold its shape, go with a cotton and foam mattress. This is light weight mattress that will not sag, and will hold its shape over time. A cotton-polyester blend will give you an even lighter mattress and it is nice and soft, making it a popular choice with many. A cotton-wool combination is a great choice if you are looking for a very soft mattress; however it is not very flexible and may not be a good choice if you plan on flipping it into a couch frequently.
4) If you are planning on using a futon mattress primarily for sleeping and not for sitting on, choose the heaviest mattress that you can. You should look for a cotton-wool blend or an all cotton mattress that has springs in it because these combinations will hold up longer and provide a sturdier sleeping environment than softer blends.
5) Check out the frame carefully before you buy. Be sure that you can operate the folding mechanisms easily and quickly. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to get your futon up and down quickly. Also, check to see if there is a warranty. You will have a wide variety of options available to you. There is something for everyone if you like a wood frame or a steel frame, you will be able to find something to suit your décor.
6) Before you purchase a futon mattress, be sure that you try it out. Lie down on it, is it comfortable? Is it big enough? Make sure you are happy with your purchase before leaving the store.
