Installing Ceiling Fans – What You Need To Know
Ceiling fans serve the dual purpose of providing you with well circulated air and at the same time act as decoration to you room. Few fans also have a light kit as an additional feature which can be used in addition to the overhead lights in your room. In the summer, fans provide you cool air which is much more economical as compared to an air conditioner which takes a lot of money. In winters, it circulates the air in the room and provides freshness. Installing ceiling fans is quite easy and when you purchase a new ceiling fan, you’ll also get an instruction manual, which acts as a guide to help you.
After you have chosen the right kind of fan for your room in terms of color, size and type, you need to make sure that the place of installation is also appropriate. Installing the fan usually means replacing a light fixture in the room. There will be all the required wiring; you just need to replace the light fixture with the fan. You need to make sure that the workbox is approved to take the load of ceiling fan. Else, you will get the wobbly fan or in some worse cases, it can cause accidents.
To start installing the ceiling fan, first of all, switch off the breaker or remove the fuse. Now, you need to remove the already existing fixture if any. Make sure that the work box has metal cross braces. They should run between two joints so that it can take the load of the fan.
Assemble the fan as per instruction manual and make sure all the blades are fixed well and are tight enough. Now, install the mounting bracket to the ceiling workbox. There will be wiring diagram given with the fan. Just follow that and hook up the wires using wire nuts. This is not as difficult as it sounds. It might just be like connecting like colored wires together.
Once you finish the wiring, finish the assembly as per the instruction manual. Install the canopy on the top in the end. Light kit is installed at the end. Turn on the breaker and test if the fan is working properly. The fan should not wobble and there should not be much noise. If the fan is not switching on at all, there might be some wiring problem. You will have to do the wiring again. If the fan is wobbling, check the instruction manual for balancing the blades of the fan.
