Making Soy Candles – Interesting and Easy

There is growing demand for natural wax candles. Soy candles have replaced the not so environment friendly paraffin candles. Soy candles are made from hydrogenated soybean oil, also called as soy wax. It is a cheaper compared to beeswax. These candles can also be mixed with fragrances so that it produces scented soy candles.

There are several advantages of making soy candles, for instance, soy candles are made from renewable sources and hence are cheaper, it is environmental friendly, since on burning of these candles, it does not release carbon dioxide, they are durable compared to paraffin candles, the wax that spills from the soy candles can be easily cleaned, and they produce less soot as compared to paraffin candles.


Making soy candles yourself can be the most interesting and satisfying job. These candles can be gifted to friends and families and also can be used in your house to keep the environment warm and cozy. The soy candles are easy to make. The materials required for making soy candles are easily available in local shops or even on the internet. For making the candles, the following materials would be required: soy wax, Mason jar, fragrance oil, wax dye, and a cotton wick. Soy wax is available in flake or block form. Flake form can be used with ease. The fragrance oil should be compatible with soy wax. For 16 ounces of soy wax, you will require 1 fl ounce of fragrance oil. The thickness of the wick depends on the diameter of the soy candle. Bigger diameter of soy candle would require thicker wick.

Heat the soy wax in a pan on medium flame till the wax melts completely. Remove the pan from the flame and add the fragrance oil to the melted soy wax and stir till it has been completely absorbed by the soy wax. Now, pour this mixture in the Mason jar ensuring the wick is in the center. Once the wax solidifies, you can trim the wick.
