The Pilates reformer is probably one of the most versatile and most used pieces of equipment for Pilates. Often new students of Pilates see the reformer and feel a little over-whelmed because of the size and all of the different parts of this equipment. However, after you familiarize yourself with the Pilates reformer you will discover that is indeed a remarkable piece of exercise equipment.

The Pilates reformer has a foot bar at the end of it. The foot bar is controlled by the gear system. The gear system is the set of numbers and notches that you will see near the foot bar. The great feature about the foot bar and gear system is that you can set the Pilates machine to meet your height requirements. This allows you to virtually customize the machine before you begin using it.

The Pilates reformer works on resistance both by springs and from your body. The different exercises for different fitness levels are based on the springs. Each set of exercises will recommend which color spring should be used. The lightest or least resistant spring is yellow. The next level up is blue. The next to highest spring resistance is green. The red resistant spring is the most resistant of all of them for workout exercises.

The middle section of the Pilates reformer is the carriage. This is where you will put the core or center of your body. Depending on the type of exercise will determine if you will sit, lie or stand on the carriage to execute the exercise. The final section is the headrest with straps. You can use the headrest in a flat or inclined position and utilize the straps as instructed by your Pilates teacher. For more information on Pilates check out www.PilatesWorkoutIdeas.com.
