February is Black History Month. A major component of the history of those we generally refer today to as "African-Americans" (other common terms over the years have included Negro, black, and some decidedly uncharitable words) is the church. The black church has been the center of community life since before the end of slavery. A place of refuge, hope, fellowship, and a driving moral force for civil rights, the Black Church is an essential part of the black community, and therefore of the United States. BlackandChristian.com is an online community for people of African descent and others interested in the African and African-American Christian experience. Here you will find Historical and reference material on the African-American Church, Denominational Highlights, a Church Directory, Clergy and leadership resources, Family ministry resources, links to African-American websites, links to Africa and the Diaspora, Theological resources for scholars, educators and students, and well-written articles on various topics. You can also subscribe to the free BlackandChristian.com Newsletter. The site is the creation of Jacqueline Trussell, going online on February 26, 2000. Trussell is a researcher, writer, lecturer, university professor, former religion editor for the Citizen Newspaper Group, and has presented research on the African American church at local and national conferences.
