The Mardi Gras parades from New Orleans are on TV today. There's Carnival in Brazil. Did you know that "Mardi Gras" is French for "Fat Tuesday"? And "Carnival" is from the Latin meaning "farewell to meat"? What's all this about? It's about the Season of Lent, a forty-day period before Easter, usually characterized by fasting, especially abstaining from meat. Hence "Carnival" and "Fat Tuesday." Lent is observed less in most Western churches these days. What is Lent all about? The Season of Lent site, produced by Ken Collins, pastor of Garfield Memorial Christian Church in McLean, Virginia, will fill you in. Collins explains the history and practices of Lent and how it fits in the church calendar. The well-written article also has links to supporting information such as the meaning of the colors of Lent and the meaning of fasting. Informative and easy to read, the site will fill in any holes in your understanding and appreciation of this season in the life of the church. You can contact Rev. Collins at .ken@kencollins.com.
