Tips on Bathtub Drain Replacement

By on March 8, 2008

Bathtub drain replacement can be a bit tedious, but overall it isn’t that hard to do. The only time you might run into complications is if the drain is old and outdated, then you may have trouble finding a suitable replacement part. There are two basic bathtub drains; knowing which one you are going to be replacing will help.

One of the types of bathtub drains is the pop up drain. To identify this type of drain simply look to see if there is a plug in your tub that goes up and down. Replacing a pop up drain doesn’t take much effort; taking no more than an hour or so at the most. Firstly though you need to put the lever in the open position and pull the stopper plug and assembly out. Next you will have to remove the cover plate and pull the entire assembly, which is all connected, out. Simply replace with the new one, going in reverse order.

The other kind of bathtub drain is the plunger drain. These are identified by again looking at the drain. If it’s either covered with a metal screen or open then you have a plunger drain. These kinds of drains take a bit more work to replace, but overall it’s not too bad. You have to remove the cover plate and slowly pull out the assembly. There are two rods that are connected and at the bottom is the plunger. Replace by reversing the order that you removed the original part and reinstall the cover plate.
