It's A Medic, It's A Doctor!

A Review of Net.Medic

Ron Enderland

VitalSigns’ Net.Medic is a performance monitor that features gauges, scrolling tickertape snapshots of system and internet health, and full-blown detailed reports of info like frequently visited sites, traffic reports, etc.

Various system areas are diagnosed, including memory usage, modem performance, and processor load. If you’re on a network, you get intranet info as well. On the web itself, your ISP’s performance is monitored.

Slowest and most-visited sites are recorded. Your total time on the net is displayed by the session, day, and month. Connection success percentages when using dial-up access is noted.

The interface itself is a marvel of moving meters. Modem sending and receiving is shown as a bar graph that gives you instant feedback. You’ll never be satisfied with the little lights on your Win95 system tray again!

It also detects hung servers, automatically reinitiating requests and speeding up things.

I really love this program. It’s not without its quirks, however. It auto-detects my modem as a 128K. I wish! Anyway, it always shows that it is connecting at 1/3 of its potential speed, "only" 33.6K. When I ask for a system analysis, this shows as a problem. I have tried manually setting the modem speed in the preferences, but it then fails to detect it at all. Oh well . . .
