Yoga Apparel – It’s The Only Thing To Wear

Something that many casual practitioners take for granted in yoga is the importance of the correct yoga apparel. This does not mean that you will be unable to hold downward dog if your pants are not the right shade of blue, but what if they are too tight? People, women especially, focus on clothing for the sake of appearance, often forsaking things like comfort and practicality (take one look at high heels if you think I am wrong). In yoga, this lack of practicality can make for uncomfortable experiences as your clothes stretch too tight for the poses that you adopt or inhibit your movements.

Whether you practice yoga for beginners or a more advanced form, and whether you practice in a studio or at home with a yoga video, dressing appropriately for your activities is important. Yoga clothing should not restrict movement, because even a little restriction can inhibit your entire workout. This is especially true for more advanced yoga practitioners, but even a yoga beginner can find that her tight pants keep her from completing a form.

Long sleeves are also not usually a good idea. Despite the calm nature of the exercises, yoga is hard work, which often causes the body to heat up. It is inconvenient to stop what you are doing in order to push up sleeves or adjust layers. Your shirt should not be too tight, but it should also not be loose enough that it catches on random limbs as you move between poses. Keep in mind that you will be contorting into positions that the designer of your T-shirt did not envision. You also do not want to do a pose that requires being at least partially upside-down and find that your shirt is falling off. If your shirt is baggy enough that it might do so, make sure that it is also long enough to tuck in to your pants.

Your pants should be a skin hugging (but not tight) kind if possible. If you don’t have tights or dancer’s apparel that you can wear for your yoga workout, think about buying some new yoga wear. In the meantime, slacks that offer a lot of room in the legs might suffice. Do not ever wear jeans or similar pants to a yoga session, as they will only get in the way, restrict movement, and provide uncomfortable distractions. Your yoga apparel is more than just a statement about yourself; it is vital to a successful workout. For more on yoga check out www.YogaPlunge.com.
