In 1947, a Bedouin youth named Muhammed edh-Dhub went looking for a lost sheep. He threw a rock into a cave near the Dead Sea and was surprised to hear the sound of pottery breaking.
Archaeologists were notified. Over the next nine years, they discovered the most amazing single treasure trove of ancient manuscripts ever uncovered. Many of the manuscripts were copies of Hebrew scripture Bible books. Others were commentary on the scriptures, other accounts and psalms that were chosen to be left out of the original Bible canon, and recordings of the philosophy of Judaism from the era shortly before the first century.
The scrolls were an earthshaking find.

To the devout who believe the Bible inspired, the discovery confirmed the exactness with which the biblical text was preserved and passed down by copyists who counted every single Hebrew letter. The book of Isaiah was found to be nearly identical to a manuscript 1000 years later, the only differences being minor changes that had no effect on the message being given.
