5 Nutritious Nuts and their Health Benefits

Despite frequent discussions regarding nut allergies, for those not allergic, nuts are great sources for nutrients and are an easy option that are not only tasty, but contain protein and vitamins that increase the body’s energy and immune system. Nuts are great snacks to take when you are heading out with the family because most don’t have packaging and they don’t need to be refrigerated.

Make sure you avoid giving nuts to young children as they are a choking hazard.

Health Benefits of Different Nuts:

Almonds: These nuts contain high levels of vitamins like calcium, magnesium and potassium which help stabilize blood sugar.
Walnuts: Ellagic acid, an antioxidant found in walnuts, supports the immune system and fights cancer. Walnuts also help decrease cholesterol and increase the elasticity of arteries. This nut is high in omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.
Cashew: High in magnesium, cashews help strengthen bones.
Pecans: This nut contains vitamin E & B, calcium and folic acid which can lower the chances of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.
Brazil nuts: High in omega 3, Brazil nuts also contain essential fatty acids and selenium, an antioxidant, which protects against thyroid problems and heart disease.

Tips for Eating Nuts:

Unshelled: This keeps the nut fresher and maintains good oil content.
Raw: Eating nuts that are not processed, salted, or roasted will protect the body from hydrogenated oils.
Soak: Soak or sprout raw nuts in purified water and sea salt for at least 8-12 hours for easier digestion.
Avoid nuts if you have a virus. Nuts are high in arginine, an amino acid that can stimulate outbreaks of herpes simplex type viruses.
