It is getting close to the time for the granddaddy of all awards programs. Today’s FamSite takes a look at the organization that is responsible for those world famous gold statues.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is the organization that awards the coveted statue called the Oscar. It has been giving those awards since 1928. But there is more to the Academy that an annual awards program. There are ongoing efforts in film preservation of films, developing educational programs for the development of future filmmakers, as well as maintaining reference and resource materials for the whole arena of motion pictures. This site serves as a wonderful introduction to what goes on behind the camera, out of the sight of the theatre viewing public.

So when you sit down to watch the Oscars next week, remember it is more that just a glitzy, star ladened television program. It is the celebration of an industry that has had an impact on all of us in one-way or another.
