Bullying is bad in all angles, shapes and forms, and as parents, we hate to see our kids being bullied by other kids be it in school or in our neighborhood. One type of bullying that has become an epidemic today is online bullying. With the popularity of social media sites, online bullying sometimes gets out of hand, and the emotional trauma it causes to the victims can be very devastating.
With this, it is important that parents maintain good communication with their kids. Here are some great tips to deal with your kids’ online bullies before things gets worse.
Let the Bully’s Parents (or Guardians) Know About the Situation and Ask For Their Help
It can be very easy for parents to be emotional and fix the problems themselves, however, sometimes, the best solution is to let people solve the problem. Find ways to talk to the bully’s parents and talk about the problem as matured individuals, let them know about their child’s mistakes. Nobody likes to raise a bad and disrespectful child, and most parents will understand the gravity of the problem.
Call the School Officials and Ask For Their Help
Usually, cyberbullies are also school bullies, thus, it’s always good to let school officials, especially the school counselor and the principal of your child and his/her online bullies know about situation. These professionals know how to handle these sensitive things well, and chances are, they even have formal programs for such things.
File a Formal Complaint
Popular social media sites, such as Facebook, have strict guidelines that protect its users from offensive and malicious individuals. Take a screenshot of the evidence of online bullying and report it to Facebook’s Help Center as a formal complaint. If proven guilty, Facebook will suspend the bully’s account or even take it out for good.
