Disabled World

It has become politically incorrect to use the term “disabled.” Nowadays, the PC police insist on terms like “physically challenged,” “mentally challenged,” or “developmentally challenged.”
Heck, aren’t we ALL challenged? I mean, unless you have someone paying your bills, giving you spending money, and serving you breakfast in bed, you are challenged by each day’s headaches.
That’s why I like the folks who are behind today’s FamilyFirst pick: Disabled World. No sugarcoating there.
Here’s their mission:

The Disabled World web site, based in Montreal Canada, was launched in May 2004 to provide a much needed international online community for people with disabilities. Disabled World, one of the very first online communities for persons with disabilities, is run entirely from a small computer in a home basement near Montreal Canada. 14 hour days are normal and weekends are virtually unheard of.

So what can you learn here? The most fascinating thing that I jumped on right away was the list of Famous People with Disabilities.
For instance, to drop a name or few, Charles Bronson is a dementia sufferer. John Mellencamp has spina bifida. Dan Ackroyd struggled with Tourette’s Syndrome when he was younger. Howie Mandel has OCD.
Fascinating stuff. There are a whole lot more resources here too for the disabled and their friends and family.

  1. I’m physically disabled (spastic paraparesis) but mentally resourceful. I have a University Degree in Law, a E.S.C.C. Degree in Advanced English, a E.S.C.C. Degree in Psychology, etc. and am now conducting research for a project.
I like helping people with special needs and disabilities and sharing thoughts and ideas as well as resources within a community of people who have an interest in these kinds of issues.
I would also like to join a foundation for disabled people so that I can be more useful to the ones in need.

    Thank you for your time.

  2. I have physical disabilities from burns. I also have Chronic Depression, Chronic Pain syndrome and P.T.S.D.. These are a result from a work related injury in 1990. My mistake was my return to work attempt. This was a mistake because provisions were to be made that never occurred, nor did any real attempt ever was made to find a place for me. This was the start of my depression, the economic state at that time is similar to now. I never had a problem getting or maintaining a job. This was used against me in many ways. First my desire for employment second the fact I did make a substantional attempt to return to my job. This attempt was seen as ability not perseverance and adaptation. My brother replaced me after my dismissal and has worked from 1994 until 2010. He was fired and suffered from a divorce and liver failure he subcomed to the liver disease 02/02/2011. His death is driving my suicide tendencies out of the ball park by interacting with my post traumatic stress. I see him in his hospital bed when he was dieing and asking me to help him and his pain. I can not forget this image combined with my never ceasing images of my own injury and my pain and loss. So much more I am in a caldera of hell. I ask for help but I do not even know if it will do any good. I can not write this any more. Rob
