How to Build a Backyard Pond Waterfall

A backyard pond waterfall is a lovely landscape addition and can increase the value of your home. There are several ways to build a backyard pond waterfall but these instructions will be the basics of putting one together.

You will need to measure out and mark the area that will be your pond with landscaping paint. You will then want to remove all sod from the area. Be careful that you do not hit any buried utility components. After sod removal, dig the area to approximately eight to ten inches deep.

Your next step is to select an area off of the pond that will be the waterfall. Remove the sod and cut into the soil to create two dirt shelves. There should be approximately 16 inches between the two layers.

Lay your pond liner in the bottom of the pond. Layer your dirt shelves with large rocks and woods of varying textures and colors. Dig a hole near the top of the waterfall area to bury the water pump. Attach the water pump parts and you are now ready to fill your pond.

Fill the pond completely with water. Place the pump and the workings in the pond to have the water circulate and pump to the top of the water fall and it will fall over the rocks and wood that you built. You can line your pond and waterfall with decorative plants and small bushes to create a more natural effect.

Your final touch will be to add some pond plants and pond gold fish. The fish will enjoy the natural setting and you can enjoy the waterfall.
