When I was a kid in the early 70’s, I used to be a stamp collector. And the way I got my stamps was simple: companies like the Littleton Coin Company would send me a whole bunch of “approvals,” that is little glassine packets of stamps that I could either buy or send back.
My childhood budget would only allow me to buy a few of them, but every month they would come in the mail, and I would dutifully look them over,. Purchase a few, and send the rest back.
The arrangement was based on trust.
