Maple Leaf Shipwreck

The history of our country is varied and exciting. The mid-18th century, during our civil war was especially interesting, and the effects of it are still being felt today. Today we take a look at a ship that has given us a fresh and interesting look at that period of time.

Called the Maple Leaf Shipwreck, this site is a history of a steamship that was built in 1851. It was used as a steamer on the Great Lakes seaway until it was chartered to the US Army as a transport in 1862. It was used to ferry troops and prisoners to and from the war in the southern part of the country. What makes this ship so unique is that is was sunk after striking a mine in the St. Johns Rive in northeast Florida, near Jacksonville. It was discovered over 100 years later, surprisingly well preserved both its structure and cargo. This site documents this that excavation, as well as the history around the ship and naval architecture of the period.
