RMS Titanic

It was 90 years ago today that one of the most dramatic and memorable events in the 20th century took place. It occurred in the North Atlantic, when a ship struck an iceberg and sank a few hours later. Over the years that event has become immortalized in books, films, and television programs. I am talking about the RMS Titanic.

Today’s FamSite looks at a site that is dedicated to not only the history and memory of that ship, but to the preservation of it as well. The forces of nature are working on the remains of the wreck, and eventually will destroy it until nothing is left. RMS Titanic, Inc. is a public company whose goal is to ensure that while the ship may be gone but not forgotten. They accomplish this by retrieving articles from the wreckage area, which covers several miles of ocean bottom. Most remarkably, they have recovered the ship’s whistle, which has been restored to working order, and can be seen and heard through the magic of the Internet. They have also recovered the largest piece of the wreckage yet, which is 26 feet by 20 feet. The recovery of it is documented as well at the site.

Time is the most critical enemy of the Titanic at this time. In order to appreciate the magnitude of the event, we must learn more about it. The best evidence is the ship itself, and we must use what remains before it disappears for all time.
