Savvy Aunties Everywhere Now Have a Resource
Aunties everywhere now have a wonderful book to check out on how to be the coolest aunt in the world!
Melanie Notkin, founder of www.savvyauntie.com, has a new book, released last week, called “Savvy Auntie The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers and All Women Who Love Kids” (William Morrow, $24.99, ISBN 9780061999970).
What started as an internet community in July 2008 is now an entire movement of women who may be childless themselves but who are not without children in their lives. Notkin’s Facebook group has over 43,000 members and over 15,000 tweeple follow her on Twitter.
She’s coined several terms from this phenomenon:
- PANK – Professional Aunts No Kids
- Auntrepreneur – “a Savvy Auntie who’s got business savvy to boot – so much she runs her own company”
- Auntie By Relation (ABR) – aunt with biological nieces and nephews
- Auntie By Choice (ABC) – aunt who adopts friends’ kids
A former marketing executive at top companies such as L’Oréal, The New York Times and American Express, Notkin has made Savvy Auntie her full-time gig. She’s helping spread the word about how you can still love children even if you haven’t had one of your own.
Chapters include tips about what your sister or friend might be going through during their pregnancy, ways to take the best pictures of kids, fun food and snacks for kids and differences between boys and girls when they play. It also details choking hazards, homeopathic treatments for common ailments, and snappy comebacks for rude people who ask you why you don’t have kids of your own.
