The Art of Flower Drying

For those flower enthusiasts, the art of flower drying has been made a lot easier with the use of silica gel. Silica , is a chemical substance that is used as dehumidifying and dehydrating agent in drying flowers. The gels are those little white granules in small sachets that are often in the box of a new leather bags , shoes and several other items. The gel absorbs the moisture of the flowers with little effect on color and form.

Flower drying is not complicated or time consuming. It is inexpensive and can be done by anyone even without previous experience. To start a project , a decorative clear vase , glass or bottle will needed as well as fresh flowers (any type) , silica gel crystals , scissors and other materials like floral tape , floral wire , floral foam , long tweezers and double adhesive tape. Any container that can be closed tightly may be used for drying. The main objective is , of course , to keep out any moisture during the process. Here’s the simple step – by – step procedure in making a craft of flower drying:

1. Cut the stems according to the height of the container.

2. Secure flowers with floral tape and arrange.

3. Carefully insert flowers in the container. Slowly pour silica gel over the flowers.

4. Fill up the container with silica gel until the flowers are completely covered , gently working it up and around the blooms leaving no part untouched.

5. Use a tight cover for the container and seal it with masking tape. Put it away for five to seven days in a dry place where the contents will not be disturbed.

6. To remove flowers, pour off mixture slowly until the blooms are uncovered. Lift out flowers gently and blow away any particles that adhere. Remove silica gel with a soft artist’s brush , leaving a very small amount of silica.

7. Attractive dried flowers are now displayed in glass containers , which are long – lasting and can be enjoyed for months , even years , and require little care.
