A few decades ago, finding reliable information meant a trip to the library. You’d search through card catalogs, navigate aisles of reference books, and hope the information you needed was in print. This insight—treating the web like a network where quality pages receive endorsement through links—changed everything. Google’s rankings were measurably better than competitors. Google’s success reshaped how families access information. No longer did you need to be media-literate or well-educated to find reliable sources—you just needed to know how to type a question. This democratization of information access had profound consequences, both positive and complicated.

This made search more useful but also more isolating. You began to see a version of the web shaped by your own patterns.

Today, as of 2026, we’re witnessing another transformation: AI-powered search. Engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity don’t just index pages anymore—they synthesize information into direct answers. Instead of clicking through ten blue links, you get a paragraph or conversation. It’s faster, more conversational, and feels almost like talking to a knowledgeable friend.

For families, this presents new challenges. When search was about finding sources, you could teach children to evaluate credibility. With AI summaries, where’s the source? How do you know what’s been fact-checked? The literacy skills our parents needed—learning to navigate search results—may not be enough anymore.
