At one time, there was a studio that boasted of “more stars than there are in heaven”. That studio was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and from the mid-1920’s until the late 1950’s, they were the studio that was the benchmark that others were measured against. The genre of film that they were most noted for, the musical, is the basis of today’s FamSite.
Called The Great MGM Musicals Page, this page is a salute to those great musicals. From the films of Arthur Freed to the works of Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Fred Astaire, there are links to all their films and more. You will find poster reproductions, cast and crew lists, synopsis and reviews.

44 years ago, when I was 12 years old, a movie came on my tv after the Miss America pageant. It was called “The Chocolate Soldier” and it starred Nelson Eddy. That was the evening when I understood what all the older girls saw in guys. There on my tv screen was a man who was great to look at, sang even better and was not full of himself. I enjoyed his acting too, especially with Jeanette MacDonald. He could have sat reading a book on screen and I would have been contented. Now that I am almost 56, I still enjoy his movies and singing AND I have found out that there are ALOT of older folks in retirement villages, etc. that love Nelson and Jeanette. There are websites devoted to them, on-going fan clubs and concerts are given in which their movie and concert songs are sung in tribute to them. Let’s get down to it. My VHS tapes of Nelson’s movies are wearing out and I have been amazed that they have not come out on DVD. The 8 movies that Nelson and Jeanette made together could even be packaged in a set and a bonus inclusion could be the “This is Your Life Jeanette MacDonald” show from the “This is Your Life” tv series from the 1950’s. It is still available because I taped it off of the AMC channel a few years ago. Also, a show about Nelson and Jeanette that was on PBS a few years ago that was hosted by Jane Powell could be included as an extra. There are so many really horrible movies that are transferred to DVD why have gems like the Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald movies been neglected? I inquire about Nelson Eddy movies on DVD at my local Suncoast video store every 1 to 2 weeks and am constantly disappointed.
I love the Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald movies
also and wish they would transfer them to DVD.
