Tips on Dealing with a Depressed Family Member

Depression is a widespread condition, yet, it’s still widely misunderstood. If left untreated, it can take over one’s life, causing everything to go in downward spiral. This is why we should be worried if our loved ones or family members are touched by depression. But rather than simply worrying, there are lot of things we can do to help them deal with their condition, and it starts by knowing how to deal with them.
Assess His State of Mind
Ask important questions and make sure you listen to his answers. Understand what’s underneath it all, obvious statements will not tell you everything, so learn how to read between the lines and dig deeper through his thoughts.
Speak Up the Truth
Rather than making statements like “hey, you should be happy!” or “cheer up!”, tell the truth with how you see things on them and what you understand and relate to it. On the other hand, saying something lie “it will pass” is one of the best things a depressed person can hear. Make him understand that things come and go, and episodes of depression will go away eventually.
Ask if He’s Receiving Any Treatment
As a mental condition, depression needs professional help, such as medication and therapy treatments. These treatments can range from counseling to use of special therapies and anti-depressants. If your family member says he’s receiving medications, ask if he’s taken his medicines as prescribed, and if they’re seeing their doctor for counseling regularly.
Encourage Exercise
Many times, depression sinks in when the patient has nothing to do and ponder on its life. Help keep his mind and body with productive and healthy activities such as going and for a run or a bike ride, going to the gym or attend fitness classes. Exercise stimulates the production of endorphin, our happy hormone, not to mention it keeps the mind and body healthy.
