Today’s Soy Candles
Soy candles are a relatively recent invention – in fact, they have only been around since 1992, a cleaner-burning alternative to traditional wax candles. There is nothing but advantages to buying or making soy candles: they are inexpensive, environmentally friendly, good for you, and they burn slightly longer than other candles. Soy candles are particularly easy to make in the form of jar candles – similar to the traditional Yankee candle. Soy votive candles are now widely available at gift shops and some grocery stores.
Most candles that you buy are made of parrafin, which is cheap and easy to work with, but may be bad for your health. Of course, if you burn a few parrafin candles now and again, it probably doesn’t put you at any significant risk. But if you are around candles all the time, you should consider the fact that they add soot to the air, and that’s not a healthy thing to be breathing in. The exception is bee’s wax candles, but bee’s wax is expensive. That’s why, in 1992, the soy candle was invented. Soy candles burn cleanly, giving off much less soot than other parrafin candles. They are make of soy wax, which is even easier to work with than parrafin, so soy candles are an excellent choice to make at home.
Soy candles can be scented and colored, and there are many different types available. For example, the traditional votive candle – a small, thick candle that is often scented – is a popular choice. If you’re making soy candles at home, consider making jar candles. Nothing could be simpler – just pour the melted wax into small jars, and add a wick. This is a traditional type of candle that is similar to the popular Yankee Candle, available at many ‘country’ style gift shops. For more ideas on candle making check out www.CandleNovice.com.
