Van Morrison

When I was seventeen years old, I knew contemporary music (1977) had problems. Groups like Styx and Foreigner were charting huge hits with music that had very little substance. I was listening to my Beatles eight-tracks and a few familiar faces like Paul Simon and James Taylor.
Then, I made a newsstand purchase that would forever change how I viewed music. I bought an issue of Rolling Stone.
The main reason I did it was because of the Dr. Hook song. I wanted to see what was behind the magazine that caused ecstasy in the hearts of performers significant enough to grace its cover.

Well, to sum up where this is heading, Rolling Stone turned me on to a slew of great artists I had never listened to before. One of them was Van Morrison.
Sure, everybody had heard Brown Eyed Girl. But RS recommended that this artist’s work be explored.
Today, I probably own 90% of the music Van the Man recorded. His great stuff is astronomically great, his misses are still worthy of a listen.

Van Morrison is an artist who deserves the acclaim received by morons with 1/100 the talent but who are willing to record formulaic garbage that sells. He will just have to settle for musical immortality.
