DaveCentral Software Archive

Well, it finally had to happen. I had been living on the edge too long, and it caught up with me. When I booted up last night to do the column for July 2, I was greeted by the infamous message “Please insert system disk, press any key to continue”. I don’t know how many times I told others to backup early, and backup often. I should have taken my own advice. Oh, I had all my documents and data files safely stored, but the programs…….wweeelllll, that is another story.

I mention this because of today’s site. I have chosen an archive site that I have been very comfortable with over the past 24 hours. It is called DaveCentral Software Archive, and is exactly what is says: an archive for software. It is the most comprehensive collection of freeware, shareware, and demos I have seen in a long time. I was searching to replace my FTP program, which is now in cypberspace, somewhere, and found many, many more than I could use. The variety of programs here is quite a list, everything from Audio to Web Surfing, with stops at Video, Winsock, Java and Multimedia in-between. One feature I like in when overviewing the programs, it is listed as either freeware, shareware, time-limited or feature-limited versions. That is nice to have that up front. Each utility has a Dave page, with links to a product home page.

Well, my computer is still having problems (which is why I am in the office at 12:45AM doing the column. I apologize for no Family Site on July 2nd, but that occasionally happens in the world computers. Hopefully I won’t be down much longer.

Postscript: I have featured some of my ISP’s special sites on the Family Site. I think they are really neat. But I would like to get some variety and see what other ISP’s are doing.
