Digital Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon

The geography of our planet is an interesting study of how we live, and how we will change over the coming years. The photographs that are coming from the space shuttle show the beauty of our planet. Today’s FamSite looks at a site that takes a look at our nearest celestial neighbor, the only one that man has walked upon.

The site is called the Digital Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon. It is a catalogue of the pictures that were taken in the 1960s for the purpose of determining where the first manned moon landings could take place. The entire visible side of the moon was mapped to within 100 meters per line pair resolution. After 30 years, these are still the definitive pictures for anyone interested in studying lunar science.
