Father Flanagan’s Boys Town
In the 1960’s, there was song entitled “He Ain’t Heavy (He’s My Brother). That familiar saying was around long before that song was published, and has its roots in the subject of a 1938 film. That film won an academy award that year for Spencer Tracy and his portrayal of the founder of the organization that is today’s FamSite.
The site is called Father Flanagan Boy’s Town, and has been around for since 1917. The town has been around that long, that is, not the web site. In that year Father Flanagan opened his home for troubled children in Omaha, Nebraska, starting on a ministry that continues to this day. His mission of helping boys to grow and become contributing citizens to society has expanded its services from simply providing food, education, and lodging to boys to helping the entire family unit.
