Portrait of Black Chicago
The best way to learn about the way our world is, is to look at our past heritage. Whether it is good or bad, it has a lesson that we can all learn from. Documenting how our country changes can help our children make this world a better place to live.
Today’s FamSite is one from the National Archives DOCUAMERICA project from the 1970’s. This site shows the work of photographer John White as he chronicles via the camera the life and culture of Black Chicago. Through these pictures, cybervisitors can experience what it was like to grow up in and around the south side of Chicago. His photographs portray the difficult circumstances faced by many of Chicago’s African American residents in the early 1970s, but they also catch the spirit, love, zeal, pride, and hopes of the community.
A visit here shows not only how the Internet can be used to spread information, but also bring us in touch with our past, and hopefully, with our future.
