Save Our Sounds

The music we hear on the radio and television not only provides information and entertainment, but it also tells about our society and what our world is like. The sounds that are we hear today will be studied and interpreted in the future so our descendants will understand how we live. Today’s FamSite has that same concept, but it is about the sounds of our past, sounds that we are close to loosing.

The site is called Save Our Sounds, and is a project by the Smithsonian Institute and the Library of Congress. Their goal is to preserve collections of historical words and music of our past, from the recordings of Woodie Guthrie to the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King. Their goal is to preserve and restore the recordings, make digital and archival copies, and to make those recordings available on the Web and on CD-ROM. This is a massive undertaking, and has the support of a wide variety of artists from Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Mickey Hart.

This is a great site, one that allows a visitor to see the results of this work, and to participate in those results. So truck on over and enjoy the works of our past.
