Growing up in a small town, our local newspaper came out weekly. If we wanted a daily paper with daily national news, we had to take the big city newspapers. But the local paper had charm, and centered on local news. That was why it was more enjoyable than the big city newspapers. Today’s FamSite combine the charm of local newspapers with the access of the internet to let you visit topics that are in those hometown newspapers.

Called Streetmail, this site is an online site comprised of local communities putting their local highlights on the net. It divides the country into four sections, from Grants Pass, Oregon to Southshore, Maine, and from Emerald Coast, Florida to Dodge County, Wisconsin. Each area has a correspondent that reports the highlights from that area, and they cover what is important to their part of the country. For example, in Grants Pass, Oregon, the topic is a recent state study that reports drug and alcohol use is up 25 percent, so now the war on drugs is back in the news. There are online contests, as well as lively online debates about the topics under discussion.
