Teaching Your Kids Money Management

Teaching your kids regarding money matters at early age is crucial on how they’ll handle money when they grow up and even their approach in life. Letting them know that “money doesn’t grow on trees” may not be enough to get them on the right way of money management, thus you need to show them the real world and how money management applies in things, such as taking obligations, saving for short and long-term goals, investing responsible, etc.

Get Started With Delayed Satisfaction Strategy

One good way to get started is to teach your child money matters through delayed satisfaction – and how money accumulates through time.

If your child wants to have something, say a gadget, a toy, a shirt, or a book, then it’s a good time to teach him money management. Say the thing he wants costs $150; teach him to save money on a piggy bank until he can afford what he want.

If all he wants is $30, then he may be very tempted to spend it for fun with his friends, food, etc. That’s hi choice. But every time he would complain about money, then remind him of how they can save $150 by simply saving money every day and learning how to spend it wisely on a daily basis.

Real Money Management

Another good way to teach your child about money management is through a small portfolio. If he has some savings, you can teach them to manage real money by matching his savings or giving him a portion of his target amount. This will teach your child the wonderful feeling of success and ultimately teach him to work for it.
