Wild Wings Heading North

The concept of the film “Fly Away Home” was how a young girl helped orphaned geese find their way south before winter hits their northern home. It was based on a true story. Now it is possible to undertake a similar project from the comfort of your own computer.

The site is called Wild Wings Heading North, and the result of several organizations. It is a site that allows a visitor to select a wild snow goose, and follow its flight south. This accomplished by having a small radio collar attached to the bird, and it’s path is then plotted on a map. Follow his (or her) progress, guess the route and the next destination. There are a lot of informational and educational aspects of this site as well. The concept of migration is explained, as is the effects of weather on the journey. There is also a Scientist’s Notebook which explains the scientific aspects of migration, and a chat forum.
